well in the book it says 5 and people are telling me 7 so i kept it safe and did 6 lol plus i think the cobra i just bought could use a little extra. 96 cobra with 1200 original miles so the parts could probably use the extra oil.
That's strange to me? My 99 manual says 6 and they all use the same oil pan? I don't know why it would say 5 on the older Cobras? That is simply WAY TOO low an oil fill level, as stated like 100 times before the 4V heads hold lots of oil when under WOT, there's not enough drainback passages to keep up with the spinning motor, this in turn leaves a lot less in the pan for the pickup to suck from! And to the guy asking about parasitic drag?
The Cranks on this motor sit up so high it isn't an issue AT ALL, even with 7 in the pan the counterweights are many inches away from the level of the oil! Once again a stock Cobra pan with 6,7 and 9 quarts, the scrappers are still above the oil with 7 in the pan, and don't forget you gonna have oil in the filter and cooler as well after the first start up so that should end the debate! http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5651/6quarts.jpg http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/479/7quarts.jpg http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/636/9quarts.jpg
Ummm.... Yeah. The manual does say 5, Ford, Haynes, Chiltons. But anyways I've used Lucas on my 2v and it lived up to 280K on boost and juice, an my buddy uses the stuff on his 03 Termi. Hell Hendrick Motorsports uses the stuff on their 800 + HP . So it's litterally track proven. An how in the hell is something thinner than viscosity of 10w-30 going to clog up oil passages made for oil when it's being circulated in a continous cycle by the oil pump...
Just throwing some opinions, not starting forum beef's
An I was refering to B-headed, maybe that's the mis-com over here ? Also the "Synthetic" stabilizer, not the standard heavy duty stuff that looks like honey, the synthetic has a clear almost light yellow tint. GOOD STUFF ! ! !

OOPS I apologize I thought you were talking about the honey molasses stuff, would you agree that is TOO thick for the oil passages in the 4V?
And yeah the B-headed don't use as much oil volume, but you can easily fit 6 in that pan and I'd go that route, BUT it's 7 for my 99
Well I had just asked my buddy how much he put's in his 03 Termi. The manual calls for 6, but he put's 6 1/2 to get it to the full line on the dipstick. They all do have the same oil pan so I do find it odd also ?
But yeah I def. would'nt use that standard Lucas on a mod motor unless I planned to mix it with straight 30w to mask a valve tick or a rod knock to get rid of it The oil valley's on mod motor's are pencil thin, an I would be a bit skeptical on the stock volume oil pump being able to push that smoothly.
But I swear by all the Lucas additives. I worked at Autozone for a few years and got to see alot of people play guinea pig and put anything in their car to avoid repairs. And that Lucas is like magic in a bottle. Cobras an Lincolns with bad timing tensioners an chain rattle, ticking lash adjusters, dry start knock (I-4 Toyotas) mostly, quiets it right down. And that tranny slip additive, also very good stuff, especially for early model Taurus's.
But when you think about it, it's only 1 quart of it to 5-6 of oil, so it's dilluted quite a bit, but the film protection and ability to stay in the lifter's an heads is what I love about. Startup is more stress on youre motor than WOT @ 7K RPM believe it or not...
Brutal I'm with you...I always get charged for 6 at Jiffy Lube...I've run Mobil 1 since day one in my Cobra and 150K miles later it runs like new...even has blower on it now, no issues...of course I don't try to break the 10.5 record on a regular basis
