hi everybody, i just bought a 99 cobra convert with blown head gasket.the car has 110,000 miles. the car blew the head gask. and the motor was replaced w/ a 33000 mile cobra motor and blew head gasket a second time.i got the original motor. the car runs and drives, but, idles a little rough. what is the best way to handle the repair/ what should i be watching for. thanks
Welcome aboard... You're going to need to pull the head (probably worth pulling both) and have the heads inspected for cracks & warping. Also have the block mating surface inspected.
How much is in your budget and what are you looking to do with the car? Daily driver, add some bolt ons mods? Build the motor for a supercharger? More info please..
i don't know if i want to build it for a supercharger or do some mild mods. i'll drive the car daily but i want some ideas of what is a good series of mods and appox. what i'm looking to spend to do them. any suggestions? also, wheres the best place to get head gasket?head bolts for the repair and are there any mods to the heads that i should look into sense i'll have them off anyway?thanks
When I did my Forged Rebuild the only thing I did to the Heads was Hot Tank, valve job and new seals, your not gonna gain much from porting unless it's done by a place like Fox Lake on their CNC machine and that's Big $$$.
Your best bet would be to replace the Head Gaskets add ARP Bolts and make sure that Head is milled flat if warped!
I'd also try to determine what caused the Head gasket failure, it's actually quite rare in this motor..
i thought that too. the orig. motor blew the head gasket and the replacement motor did the same less than a thousand miles later. i am thinking the radiator might be clogged or the fan has a problem. can the radiator be cleaned completely at a shop? does the onboard diagnostic check the fan system? whats the best way of checking. the car runs but sputters on start. how can i be sure it has a blown head gasket? thanks
