Angry 2003 Mustang Cobra 1st Gear and Reverse Problems Need Help!

My car has 4K miles on it, everything was fine unitl, 1st has always been a bit stiff to get into but nothing serious... After driving about 70 miles the car had issues getting into reverse (really hard) I pretty much had to cram the shifter into place to get the car to take reverse. Even sitting in the garage with the motor running I have trouble getting into most of the gears (reverse and 1st being the hardest). When I go to shift into a gear I can hear a thunk in the trans, even if the gear shifter doesn't go all the way into gear. When the car is off and cooled down, no issues going into any gear! If you know something about transmissions, this must mean something...

This must of come up before, but I could not find any related links... Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks again,
Casey

Sounds like your clutch may not be completely disengaging. Pull up on your clutch pedal (if you have the original plastic quadrant) and see if you get a click out of it. Where does your clutch pedal engage (near the floor, near the top) when you take off?

I just got rid of that plastic piece, the shop replaced it with a Billit manual adjustable cable, I used to have that problem , and a noisey clutch pedal ,now it great

You are welcome. Glad that I could help. Somtimes us old farts have made so many mistakes that we actually get good (at times).

Been a shade tree mechanic for over 40 years now.
