Default 2003 Cobra shifting is very sticky, anyone else having this problem?

When running through the gears in my 03 cobra they seem to hit somthing before going all the way into gear. If I am sitting still, I can hold the clutch and smoothly run through the gears. If I am moving it seems that from first to second it hits a tough spot in the shift then goes into gear likewise from 2 to 3 not so much 3 to 4 or 4 to 5 is this a clutch or transmission issue?

It is possible that there might be an adjustment problem with the clutch that is not allowing it to dissengage fully. Since shifting is smooth while sitting still, I doubt it is the clutch though.

Ten to one, your synchronizer (sp?) rings are worn a bit.

The synchro rings guide the gears into each other when they try to mesh together during a shift. There are a few layers of them between the gears that act like a constantly adjusting ramp for each gear tooth. If they get worn, the ramp effect doesn't work very well and the gear teeth can bump into each other's ends. The synchro's are made of a much softer metal alloy than the gears themselves so they will wear out first, and are much cheaper to replace than a bunch of gears.

Drag racing style shifting is extremely bad on synchronizers.

The synchro's are only important while all the parts of the transmission are moving. When you are sitting still, you could take them out altogether and the gears would still shift pretty smoothly because none of the gears are moving.

One thing I notice is that sometimes you need to make sure you push the clutch pedal in further to help that situation, try pushing it to the floor and see if that helps...also a Pro 5.0 shifter helps shifting as the throws are much shorter, my original T45 has over 150K miles on it and it's still going with no repairs or rebuilds, so unless some previous owner dogged the trans it should be in good shape as that 6 spd is really stout.

I guess I should have added that the car only has 3,000 miles on it and it has obviously sat quite a bit. It is a black convertible with a black top. I have added a full Bassani exhuast, cold air intake, and a steeda tri-axe shifter. It has never seen snow, and the previous owner had not driven it since november of 2008 and I bought it in june of 2009. Sorry about the lack of details, I am a rookie. And also thank you this is all great stuff!!!!

With the car off pull the clutch pedal towards you, that will reset it. Happens to me in my 03 sometimes as well.

Did you ever change the trans fluid?

+1, pull up on the clutch pedal. Also since it's several gears, i would chalk it up to the pedal needing the adjustment or the cable somehow stretched. If it was one or two gears, i would think the synchro's are bad.
Even a 03 with 3K miles, i would still change the fluids.

Yeah, I forgot about that clutch adjustment. Been 20 years since I drove a Mustang with a stickshift.
