Default 1999 Mustang cobra IRS clunk

i am hearing and feeling a thump/clunk noise from rhe rear area everytime i engage or disengage my clutch and change gear. it is there in all gears and it makes the noise when i push or release the gas. i checked the u joints and there is no play there but the shaft moves left to right about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch at the rear end. is this a normal amount? the emergency brake was locked so the wheels were not moving. if its play in the rear end, is this common? thanks
