In the next couple of months I am purchasing my first Mustang. I am leaning toward a Mach I. I do NOT want a supercharged Cobra ('03+). I would like some input on the 1999 SVT and the 2001 SVT (I think those are the years Ford made non-supercharged SVTs). Any input is welcome, thanks.
Never mind. I just found a thread on this topic and learned quite a bit about them. I am curious though, how do you think the '01 Cobra compares to the new Mach I? Purely from a perfomance stance. I plan to do some road racing with this car, so suspension (if there is any difference) is an important factor.
From what I understand the new Machs show better quarter times than the pre-boost Cobras. But I haven't seen two stock versions duke it out first hand yet.

i bet it would be a close race. the 99 & '01 cobras have 320hp and the mach has 305 (same motor as 96-98 cobras, i believe) im not sure if the mach has independent rear suspension but i know those 2 cobras do. id go with the cobra ... i think it puts a lil more fear in the opponent. but, onthe other hand, those shaker hoods are cool too!

The Mach has a solid rear. I thought your drag racers loved those?
No way! Serious? I thought all '02 (or '03) and up Mustangs now had IRS. If thats the case the Mach is out . No drag racer here, IRS is a must. What about plain GTs, IRS? Is the SVT the only one with IRS?
What's wrong with a "boosted" 03/04 SVT Cobra?????
If you lean more towards autocrossing than open track events.... And you plan to go for points in stock class...... the Mach actually fits quite nicely into B/stock...pure..... much more useable low end torque...no waiting for revs, or secondary (IMRC) to open up, than the earlier N/A cobras....already has 3.55 gears, yes a live axle but they still handle great and have the big Cobra brakes.....300 some pounds lighter I think than 03/04 cobra(iron block+IRS), and a little lighter than 99/01(IRS)
Heads on Mach, Aviator,Marauder,and.............03/04 SVT Cobra are identical, right down to the cams (intake cams are the same as 32v Navigators)....And are BETTER than all the other 32v ford heads IMHO, except2000 cobra R, or FORD GT....cooling passages on all our 32 valvers are not big enough for racing IMHO
Ride quailty and handling in the new cobras is FANTASTIC!!!...I LOVE mine!!
Guy's that are blowing stuff up are mostly all running 500 plus at the rear wheels, some with questionable tunes(lean)...
For open track there are some cooling issues with our cars, If you really run a stocker hard(heat soak)
That's why we get the bigger heat exchangers(GORDSFORD), and some get the fluidyne rad, stainless front brakelines, Better pads,Full synth fluids after 5k(on engine) If you bump the boost I would think about getting some Evans NPG+ waterless coolant.... alows higher temps with out the vapor barrier(I'm getting it)
Cobra is great bang for the buck..... but so is the mach......
Bottom line.... Drive both.... then check your budget.
I bought mine without EVERdriving one!!!..........But I knew what I was getting(research!!!!)
Good luck! you will love either one!!!
Jimmy :thumbsup
Uhm, no. Different heads and cams among other things. Heads are the same as on the 03/04 Cobra. For the starter of this thread, go to www.mach1registry.com for good info on the Mach. Go to www.modularfords.com or www.svtperformance.com for good info on the 03/04 Cobra.

Thanks, good info guys. I am wanting to run in the AI class with NASA (eventually). Don't know if any of you are familiar with it, but there are some serious Mustangs out there.
As a beginner I was looking to stay away from the 03/04 cobras because it would put me in the AIX (American Iron Extreme) division. Baby steps and all that jazz. Sounds like the 01 cobra is the car for me, and maybe later I can bolt on a blower for AIX.
different cams and heads? thats good to know, i never knew that. but why did they change all that, dont they both (96-98 cobra and mach 1) make 305 hp anyway? maybe they just found the newer pieces to be more durable?

It seems the Mach's are probably a bit underrated. Check out Mach1registry and see. Some are freaks but most seem to be around 275rwhp/300rwtq, much more than the 96-98 Cobra's. Pluse, I see several stock Mach's hitting 104-105 in the quarter, bone stock. Not many early Cobra's doing that. I'm sure the 3.55 gears help a bit but the cams are probably best for low to mid range torque.

Thanks for the links 95MGTS :thumbsup
Hey Mule, any good websites on running in AIX? I've thought about it as well but with a different car but would like to know the classes and rules. I thought a new 05 Mustang might fit the bill.

This has the rules and links to other informative racing sites. I am running the HPDE events with NASA in order to get my competition license. I have been to 4 events and can tell you the 'extreme' in American Iron Extreme is just that. Fully race prepped mustangs that weigh 2700-2800lbs and are putting down around 450rwhp. I run a Viper and can hang with some of the AI guys (if I was a better driver I would probably be a little faster than AI), but AIX, forget it!
