Cool 3.73 or 4.10 gears?

All righ here we go!

Gears.... 3.73 or 4.10

Here is my thinking and situation. Most everyone thinks that at least 4.10's should be run on DOHC cobra. But I know that running 4.10's will mean shifting at the end of the 1/4 mile, killing ET's. And that 4.30's should be the most logical.

Of course I want more acceleration off the line. But I will never run drag radials. And to steep of gears without DR's and traction means little. This is going to be an all around straightline/corner carving/daily driver. with lots of highway miles too and from events and family 300 plus miles away. I like to drive 85mph. So took my car up to the RPM that 4.10 plus gears would give me at 80-85mph and I don't like the buzz/rpm for cruising. I could care less about the gas mileage.

I'm looking for better off the line acceleration and good pull out of the corners. But still very highway friendly.

3.73 seems like the best choice. Perhaps 3.90's, but I can't find a quality mfg in that ratio.

What do you think?

Glen I think 3.90s would be perfect for a street tired Mach1-------> linky------>http://www.mustang-50.racenet.net/gears.php

Also a torque arm would help hook up and corner exiting------>linky-->http://www.globalwest.net/mustang%2079-98.htm

i have 4.10's in my '98 cobra. about the perfect street gear for me. never had to shift to fifth, even on the bottle. i usually shift at around 6600rpm and leave at around 5000rpm with the old slip-n-slide the clutch method. truthfully the difference between 3.73 , 3.90 and 4.10's is hard to notice, it's just not that much rpm difference.

rpm sounds too high for 3.73, probably 4.30's i'm guessing.

if your trac-loc is still good, jack up both rear wheels and mark the driveshaft and tire and count how many revolutions of the tire to drivshaft. if your trac-loc is burnt up you won't get an acurate count though.
