Default '03 cobra vert audio question...

Hello all... first time poster here. I just got my 10th aniversary svt cobra this past wednesday and am already wanting to add onto the mach 460 sound system. I have an alpine cd/mp3/wma player in a box here beside me wanting to go inplace of the in dash changer. Here is my question though. I have been looking at some kicker solo-baric subs and was wondering if i was to get vented enclosure and slap it in the trunk, if i would be doing it in vein? will the sound make it through the back of the trunk/top motor area.... or will i lose out on alot of the potential of the sub by having it in there? Any suggestions or links to related sites would be greatly appreciated. I love the default stero system, but it lacks the hard hitting bass that i feel it deserves.

Thanks in advance.

a KICKER Solobaric is a great choice. but, they are NOT designed for ported (vented) enclosures. they are designed for sealed applications (which delivers a deeper, harder punch) i have a 12" installed in my 97 gt coupe and it sounds incredible. (i have the mach 460) im sure the conv. mechanisms won't make much of a difference. take a look at my gallery and you will see a pic of the custom enclosure i built for my car...it is built to kicker specs and fits sweet in my trunk, hardly taking up any room at all...just the .88 cubic feet that kicker recommends.. if you have anymore questions feel free to ask. by the way that 10th anniversary cobra is nice i looked at those awhile back...i have a cobra too, 1998.

cool... so even being a convertable you dont think i would just be rattling my trunk with a 12" solobaric in the trunk?

you didn't mention rattling..it sounded to me like you wanted to know if the bass would travel through the conv. top mechanism and rear seat. as far as rattling goes...i can't promise you anything...but i KNOW those subs really hit hard.

well, i expect some rattling... i just mean i dont want Rattling to be all it does. I took that plastic carpeted piece out today... the piece that hides the 2 amps for the mach 460 and the conv motor. now the only thing between the trunk compartment and the passenger compartment is a thin piece of vinal that the conv top folds down into and then the back seat. I am beginning to feel more and more confident that i will be pleasently pleased with the route im fixing to go. As far as the rattling goes, i plan to have dynomat (sound proofing stuff) installed in the trunk compartment to reduce bumper/tail light rattling.

I really appreciate the info. If anyone else has more to add, please feel free... I feel i cant learn enough through others experiances.

well, blotto, it sounds like you are well on your way to having some good bass. but, remember, when you remove the soundproofing from between the trunk and rear seat, you will most likely have a lot more road noise coming through as well. especially while the radio is at low volume. what size amp will you be using? where are you going to mount it? are you planning on building your own custom enclosure? i see that you are new to this site, stick around because these guys/ ladies can mostly likely answer every question that you can throw at them.....no joke!

put 100 miles or so on the car tonight without that plastic piece in there, noticed no differance although im sure there had to be some. As far as the amp and speaker, im getting a kicker 600.1 (1200 peak watts 600 rms x1 @ 2 ohms) and a 12" kicker solo-baric L7 2004 model (75 - 750 rms). Not really sure where ill mount the amp, im more than likely going to have my local circuit city run the 4 gauge wire from the battery back when i have them mount my alpine inplace of the factory head unit... Im sure they will have insight as to where to mount the amp. I will more than likely have to build my own enclosure to get the volume that i am wanting... however i do it, it will be a removable deal if i ever need to lose an extra 60 lbs or so.

Thanks as always

yes, make the box removable. did you see my speaker box in my gallery????? thats exactly what you need to do. i wouldn't have circuit city do your radio or 4 gauge power cable...they ARE a bunch of high school hacks!!! do it yourself. you know its done right, its cheaper, and you have the satisfaction of saying that you did the whole stereo yourself. the power cable is very easy to run...shouldn't take any more than 20 min. to 30 min. you wouldn't even know mine was there, either. just be sure to use a rubber grommet where the cable goes through the firewall!!!! and dont forget an inline fuse right near the battery!

ok heres where im at now...

Im stuck wondering what i need as far as wire harnesses go. From what i gather i will need a metra amp integration harenss in order to keep all factory speakers working like they are with the factory head unit right?

Also, do i need anything else other than the metra harness like a crutchfield wire harness for the mustang?

Essentially what i have is my new head unit to replace my factory head unit. I want to put my alpine inplace of the mach 460 Head unit while keeping all the factory mach 460 speakers like they are. I just need to know what all i should be ordering to put this puppy in myself. I dont want to get my dash tore apart and have to wait a week on a part.

Any help is appreciated

i believe all you need is the wire harness that you are talking about, it bypasses the internal radio amp and allows your 460 factory watts to continue working. oh ya, and be sure you have pre amps in the back of your new radio for the rca jacks.

Update on my install...

Switched the mach 460 head unit out tonight with my alpine... but i have a new question. There were 3 diffrent plugs in the back of the factory head unit not counting the antenna. one of the 3 only has 3 wires hooked into the plug itself 2 blueish ones and 1 white one. I didnt have a harness for this plug to hook into, so i just left it loose in there. I tried several times to check what it actually did with the factory head unit before deciding that i couldnt tell what it did. Anyone know what its for? it is a 40ish pin female plug with only 3 wires. i wound up only using the metra 70-5519 i believe it was.

If youre familliiar with the mach 460 head unit, it would be the middle plug in the back.
