Default Air Silencer

Just looking for some feed back on removing the air silencer? I have heard mixed review's... Dose it really do anything for you? I put in the KN Air filter and was going to remove the Silencer, but I want some info first..

Thankss

MM&FF has an article where they pitted the 03 Cobra vs. 02 SS (Pony car death match Aug. 02 issue) and they yanked the air silencer and factory filter out and gained almost 13 rwhp. from the Cobra. Same thing done to the Camaro SS and gained 11.2 rwhp.

The only reason cars have air silencers is because its mandated by EPA. They don't want us to scare little old ladies with a loud intake. YANK IT!

It's not a silencer.... It's just a big snorkle.
I took mine out, and was very suprised to find zero resonance box, zero baffles, zero resrtiction to my eye
So I'm like ............. ok I don't like the looks of this but I'll try it...
Seemed fine till the weather warmed up...
Lots of stop lights and stop signs.... plus HOT weather = lazy pig off a stop...
I put mine back on...... BAM .....better after heat soaks.... about the same on the highway.
2 weeks later put a K&N drop in........ BAM! That IMHO is where the power came from.
Don't take my word for it pull it out and look at it!
I just don't see much if any restriction there.... not at all like the old 5.0 cars
When I do change something on the intake side it will be a fender well cold air kit with a BIG conical filter ...like the Kenne Bell... only probably home made.

Try it..... Who knows... If you're not having to stop all the time ... you may be fine.
You will see what I mean about not being a real silencer though... It's straight through------->
I think the silencing comes from just sucking in the fender well instead of under hood..

Jimmy :thumbsup

I read that article also. But to get horse power gains, they also pulled the screen out of the MAF and found that the car was running dangerously lean, so they put back. I think with just removing the snorkle and adding a K&N it was something like 7 rwhp wasn't it? You could be right, but thought that the big gain was with the screan out.

Anyways, I pulled mine out of 98 and didn't notice any seat of the pants gains. The sound didn't even change, like it had on my other mustangs. I think I might have got a couple hp out of it, but not really worth that much. I'm going with a CAI shortly anyways, so I still have the stock filter in there. My car has been running rough at idle, and I have to wonder if removing the snorkle had anything to do with it. Cobra's seem to be extremely picky about flow into the MAF. I tossed the snorkle, so who knows.

Glen...
I just skimmed through that article again (Pony car death match, MM&FF) and they didn't say anything about the MAF screen. Must of been another article, but what you said does sound familiar.

I have another Ford car with just the snorkle removed and a k&n. I noticed a difference in the cars performance.
