just had acouple of questions about my 98 cobra. (1) at what rpm's does my cobra make max hp? (2) what rpm's does it make max. torque? (3) what rearend gears come in this car from the factory? thanks fellas. i think these should be pretty easy questions. im lookin to install a shift light and im wonderin what the rpm pill should be.

I could be wrong, but all engines peak horsepower at 5,250 rpm. Also that is when torque and hp meet. Torque will climb but hp will start to drop.
Anyone have any dyno sheets to compare this with?
Sorry not all engines, I should have said most gas engines. Diesel's are a different story.

On a dyno graph 5250 is where the hp and torque lines will cross. When I dynoed mine (Results in sig) it peaked around 6000 for hp and around 5000 for torque. Only thing is it never really dropped on the hp all the way to redline, it just kinda stayed up there. I lowered my times by a tenth or two at the track by shifting at 6700 instead of shifting at 6100. So if your racing, tack it up right untill it hits redline. Factory gearing is 3.27's. Some people even take out the factory limiter and shift around 7300 or so but I don't know what all is involved and why.

does anyone know what is inlvolved in removing the factory rev limiter? does it require a chip?

It definitely requires a chip. I just don't know what all mods they have to keep the hp up that high, as I'm sure it would start to drop off after redline. The reason for the limiter is the valve springs won't handle much more than the 6700 rpms, so I don't know whether they are installing better springs or running on borrowed time. Also they probably have something like an SSR short runner intake to maximize the hp up top. Thats all I can think off. If your interested in doing this you will probably have better luck at svtperformance.com.

thanks for the help, no slow. wish you lived closer...we have a lot in comon..it would be nice to check each others cars out. you just upgraded from a 96-98 sohc GT too, right? your sig. says you have flowmasters on you cobra...how does it sound? i love the sound (unlike most others on here) of flows. they are on my gt (yes, it STILL hasn't sold...i honestly can't understand why)and the flows sound great on there.

I upgraded from a 95 GT. It sold 3 days after the ad came out in the newspaper, but I sold it very cheap. To be honest the sound is great from idle to 2100rpms and from 2800rpms up. Between 2200 and 2700 it makes a weird tone that I'm not used to yet. When it gets around 4000rpms it sounds real mean and at 6700 it sounds like your doing about 10,000rpms. If I were you I would go with a h-pipe and flows, instead of the x-pipe. Theres a very little difference in power and if I could go it all over again I would probably have gone h-pipe since I'm partial to flows. If you want an x pipe for the sound go with some straight through mufflers like magnaflow, they sound good. Or you can get a Dr. Gas x-pipe and flows, because on the Dr. Gas x pipe the cross over is before the tranny tunnel and will make a better sound.
