Default Next Mod (96 Cobra)

I have a 1996 Cobra with 45K on it. It has and intake, shifter, h-pipe, lowering springs, new clutch. I have some money to spend on one or two more mods and i would like to know what you think i should get. I was looking at headers, perfomance chip, throttle body, or a few other things. What do you think i should get to help the performance of my car. Also, I dont know if I can get gears becasue i need to drive my car to work everyday and I cant hurt my gas miliage to much. Would 3.55 gears help at all, or would 3.73 be better?

Your gas mileage won't change significantly if you switch gear ratios. The most bang for your buck is going to be gears. Go with 4:10, they will make you soil yourself if you switch from stock. 3:55 won't make enough of a dif, and 3:73 is still too high. If you don't want 4:10s at least get 3:90s. As far as other mods, how much do you have to spend?

If you've got $700, look into a chip, I hear Diablo is pretty good. Gears should run around $200, (make sure your friend knows what he's doing with gears). So you got 450-500 left. A chip will soak up most of that. Make sure you don't get a JET chip, or any other crap thats cheap. Get Diablo, and get it burned for your car. Any other cash you got left over, spend on the chicks that will be jocking your sick ass ride, or start saving for a new set of tires, you'll need them soon! Keep us posted on your car. It sounds like a great start.:thumbsup

Don't listen to this guy above me. I am sorry but thats the worst advice I have seen from here and its typical. He has next to nothing for modifications. Does anyone ever know wtf they are talking about????(I know there are few but damn)
Its typical that you prolly havent modded, tuned or worked on cars. Do not waste your money on a chip where you will not see any hp gains. That's the same advice I hear ricers give..a chip man it makes so much hp.

The gears which you will need a new bearing overhaul kit(comes with the race bearings and carriers and pinion, crush sleeve, shims), gear oil and friction modifier and a speedcal to set the speedo that wires directly into the VSS on the upper left side of the trans.

If you have money left, get some SFC's that will stiffen the car and handle much better. There are alot of other mods that will net hp(o/r mid pipe10-20 hp), headers(LT's or JBA), cams, SSR2 intake or if you want a power adder, you can always go nitrous. All depends on your goal and what you want.

No ricers would say invest in a 'shopping cart handle spoiler' and a set of headlights.
What kind of nitrous set up do you think he could find for the $450 he's got left after the gears? 'Worst advice ever' my @ss. I do agree with the sub frames you suggested, but look at how much money he's got. You might as well suggest a supercharger.

do you think that nitrous would really be a good thing to get, and a thing that would help me?

It'll be hard to find a kit for under 500 bucks, but if you do, you'll feel a huge dif. When I had my stock motor I had BBK long tubes, t/b, cold air, h-pipe, magnaflows, subframes, pullies and a shifter. I installed a 100 dry shot, and nearly Sh!t myself the first time I squeezed. Also if you purge out the hood vents it looks great. If it's affordable get nitrous. Otherwise get whatever mods Blackfang or I talked about, that fit your style. Also Nitto nt555r are great tires to go with. They don't get great mileage but the hook up real well.

For what it's worth, over the past several years, I have made the following modifications in the following rough categories:

Vortech V-2 SQ Supercharger w/ 3.48” drive pulley
Vortech Aftercooler

Forged Pistons (CP 9cc dished) and Connecting Rods (Prime One/ModMax)

42# Fuel Injectors

Big Air 90mm Mass Air Meter

Bassani X Pipe & Dynamax Cat Backs

4 Bank Chip

MSD DIS-4 Ignition Box

Abbott ERA

Phantom Fuel Pressure and Boost Gauges

MSD Shift Light

C&R Aluminum Radiator

180 Degree Thermostat

Canton Oil Pan

Steeda Battery Trunk Remount

4.10 ring and pinion

Ford Racing 11" Clutch Upgrade

Ford Racing Alum Drive Shaft

Steeda Tri-Ax Shifter

Autopower 6-pt Roll Bar

Sparco Safety Harness

Steeda HP Brake upgrade

Bilstein Struts & Shocks

Sub Frame Connectors (Super Sub Doublecross-zinc)

I would suggest that the first things to do are the 4:10s, the Steeda Tri-Ax Shifter, and the Bilstein Struts & Shocks. If you have a convertible, I am also a pretty big fan of roll bars. Hope this helps

Who ever told you to get a chip, your advice on the 4valve is now worthless forever in my opinion. Headers or a mass air will give you the best difference besides gears. Cams would be great but you wont get them for 700. Its about800-900 for regrinds. Do not I repeat do not squeeze the juice on the 4v unless you want to blow your motor quickly. You need to get forged pistons and rods for the stock ones are junk on our cars. You can get a chip but not a plug in chip like a jet chip etc. I went that road already. Aside from removing the stock limiters in the computer there a waste of money as far as a power adder. Do the chip last at a dyno shop to bring everything together with a strong tune. On a natrally asperated car a chip and tune will get you maybe 8-12rwhp. With a power adder I recomend a chip and tune. But that is last.

Check www.corral.net and www.mustangworld.com or ebay for some good prices on a Nitrous kit. They are out there.
However you suggesting he get a Chip as his first mod proves you have no clue what you are talking about and it is bad advice. Why on earth waste 150-250 bucks for MAYBE 5-10 hp at best. Then on top of that every mod he gets afterwards, he will have to reburn the chip(anywhere from $50-100 bucks each time) to notice and get the full benefits. Hell that costs more money. Yes your advice is the worst ever.

I didnt say he had to spend it all on all the mods at once like you are referring. I offered other suggestions for later on down the road...

Sorry for any bad advise given by Mysticcobra1251. I am the creator of this account and it seems that one of my buddies (Chevy guys), but prob my little brother, have been posting under my name. Blackfang, 96stick, and anyone else who said a chip was a bad idea is right. They suck! Nitrous isn't a bad idea, SFC's are good, MAF is a great idea, and gears are the best yet. So sorry for any inconvinience provided by this user. And believe, me my little bro is gonna get his ass kicked for this...
