Default Tire Set Up Question

I am thinking about changing to Nitto NT555 285/40/ZR17s on the back, and just staying with the Firestone 255/45/ZR17s on the front. Any comments on whether this is a good idea or not? Any better ideas?
I am thinking about this set up for daily driving, and some light road racing. I switch over to Nitto drag radials for drag racing.

I was going to do the big/little thing, then Chuck from Maximum Motorsports told me not to. He said, for handling, the front is the problem not the back. Chuck said to put the largest tire I could up front and just match the rear. I have 275/40/17's all around on my 94 Cobra and it handles great!

For road race I generally have kept a 265-285/35/18 up front and a 295 in the rear with the IRS and a 315 with the solid.
