Default stock maf size?

forgive me if this is a dumb question. im sure i knew it before, but know im confused. what size is the stock maf in a 96-98 cobra? i thought it was 80mm. c&l sells 80mm maf's for my cobra. so, are the stock units smaller? like 70 or 75mm? thanks fellas, im feeling a little dim witted right now. also if it is smaller than 80mm, is it worth me upgrading to an 80? what kinda hp can i expect? 3-5 rwhp maybe?

I own a 94 cobra, so I do not know to much about 96-98's, but I am pretty sure that the stock one is 80mm too. If your MAF is anything like the 94-95's then ours is a 70mm stock, but it has a big shaft that runs down the middle of it. Taking up about a quarter of that 70mm. So your 80mm might have a "shaft" in the way or some other obstructions, whereas the aftermarket MAF's are perfectly smooth.

Yeah it's 80mm. I doubt you'll pick up any noticable diff.

I just went through this with my 98 Cobra. It is an 80mm from the factory. But the C&L 80mm is shaped different, smoother, and the sample tube is removed. And it calibrated by them for your car.

Trust me, it makes a HUGE power difference. I highly recommend it. I woke my car up. I have no dyno to prove it, but I'm guessing I picked up 15RWHP from it. I race a friend of mines 98GT on a weekly basis. I pulled an extra car length on him after the install. and I still do every week. He noticed my car being faster, so it wasn't just my buttometer.

C&L has a dyno chart with the upgrade on a 98 Cobra, and I think it showed something like 17hp gain at the wheels.

I'm pretty impressed with it. I went with the Filter/MAF combo.

I plan to have my car dyno tuned, because I think it is running lean. This may be the only draw back to the mod. But once dyno tuned, it will pull even more power, so it can only go up from there.

Hope this helps

Default Mass Air Badass

80mm is stock. Difference between stock and aftermarket is in the modifications made to enhance/smooth out flow.

If you've had your gear on a dyno and its flow-restricted (happens if you swap in big cams, for instance, or go with super/turbo chargers), good after-market mass air unit will help you out.

If you're still stock internally and na, mass air may make a small difference, given that the stock unit is restrictive. Also, it may make virtually no difference, if the stock unit was able to flow all the air your engine needed.

If you havent pulled some time on a dyno, you spends your money and you takes your chances.

Default Just a Sample

Don't think anyone out here has circumcised their mass air. Suspect this would wreck its function. Also suspect if they had done it, they'd be ashamed to admit it.

Fun to know for sure, though.

If you try the experiment let us know what you find out. Might be able to find a cheap mass air in a junkyard...

its definitely been done. and why the hell would anyone be ashamed to admit it? why would it wreck its function? have you ever looked at the inside of a MAF? its got a large tube going straight through it.
infact, there's a "how'to" article hear on the site. i wonder if they are ashamed its on the site?

Default Why the hell?

All you need is a dremel tool and some time. It works great. We've all done this and are hiding it from you so our cars will run better than yours.

The guys selling aftermarket mam's for your car are just out to take your money. They hope nobody figures out how easy it is to fix the oem item. Heck, you don't even need a dremel tool - a pocket knife will do.

And just like with a circumcision, a little slip can ruin your whole day.

Default Gift

"What are the disadvantages of home porting or larger aftermarket billet ends?
  • They are for off-road use only.
  • They are not calibrated so the factory computer will “learn out” these modifications after 200 miles negating any performance increase
  • They cause the engine to run lean" - granatelli motorsports
200 miles. Hardly seems to be worth all the bother.
