there is a design flaw in the head...the #8 cylinder does not get enough cooling which causes a premature wearing of the exhaust valve guide, thus causing a "ticking" sound
I believe it was a TSB item, it may have been fixed, there is the rumor of the "blue stripe" on the heads that have been changed out...main thing is just to listen for it, it's quite noticeable once the car is warm

I'm pretty sure that Ford has a TSB out to get it replaced. I have a 96 Cobra with the DOHC 32v, and it ticks. But I'm positive its just valve train noise. When you have 32valves working away, there is bound to be some sound. If its louder than a smooth tick, be alert. Otherwise I'd say its normal

I wouldn't worry about it until the time comes to look at the one of your choice.. FYI 04's aren't gonna have that issue and the Majority of 03's as well..

You will love it!! I'm a foxbody 5.0 lover, but the linear power delivery of the DOHC 4.6 is orgasmic

no it wasn't just on the 03, it's on any C headed 4.6 dohc, and amazingly enough on the new 5.0...some dumb a$$ at Ford must have used the same blueprint to design that engine
And no, not all have had the work done, it's was a TSB, not a recall, so it's very possible to find a car that can or will have the problem
If you find one that is clean, then get what is known as the "head cooling mod" to remedy the problem
I'll also add my Cobra does not "tick" it never has, so don't let anyone tell you "it's normal"...it isn't, it's a flaw and eventually you would have to deal with it at a cost of around $4000 for a new head and labor

I know Iv'e been a Fox-Body guy forever but in the long run the Terminator will be more collectible, and a better overall choice. Might as well sell this fox and get the supercharged beast and mod that. Honestly, when I sold my SN95 I cried immediately so this should be bittersweet

when did the "revised" head launch? Does the 9 have revised cooling passages? Isn't it strange the new 5.0 still has problems on the #8?

have you put the "cooling mod" on your car? I sure would if I had a Termi, it's inexpensive enough

the Head tick is not exactly decided by "year" of the car. but build date of the motor, im not 100% sure but i belive MOST 04s have it fixed but there are some out there that have a earlier engine build date that made its way into 04s. the build date in on a sticker on the Driver side valve cover. though i cant recall which date... ha

id get a Head cooling mod for SURE, iwas looking into getting a Termi.. i love em. and then i went with a GT500.. :p

engines built before November 1, 2002 have the issue!! u can look on the barcoded sticker on driver side valve cover near the master cylinder, now if it has the revised head, itl have blue paint on the head right about the exhaust ports!

hope that clears some stuff up
