Question overheated 2001 Cobra

I took my 2001 Cobra to the dealership for the 15k service. They changed the oil and flushed the coolant system and put in fresh coolant. When I drove away from the dealer, I noticed the engine was not making full power. Then the temp guage went full HOT! I shut down the engine and called the dealership. They told me to limp back. I drove back to the dealership keeping the enging under 2000 rpm (total roundtrip was about 9 miles). By the time I got back to the dealership, the engine was knocking, I could smell the engine and the power was way down.

They told me there must have been an air bubble in the coolant system. They gave me back the car and said everything was ok. Well, how do I know there was no permanent damage? The engine does not smoke when I start it and it seems ok. What can be done to detect any long term damage? What tests can be run or parts should be changed? I have a friend that suggested the water hoses and thermostat should be changed.

Any suggestions?

I think you should be okay. Theres really no way to tell if anything happened. If it doesn't smoke or knock anymore, I would be fine with it. Besides, don't go replacing something that 1) Isn't Broke and 2)Is still under warranty.

Thanx for the reply - I have been watching and listening.

The car is out of warranty, so if there was a problem caused by
the overheating, now would be the time to identify it to the dealer.

Default overheat

I had a misfire that got worse. When it got to the point I was afraid to hit the gas I took it to a dealership. They said nothing was wrong. I took it to an alternative repair facility who within a few hours determined that the head gasjets needed to be replaced. After twenty nine days I got it back and it has been fine. The thing is it never overheated. I have tape on the guage and the needle moves about two millimeters once warmed up. Since the repair that the warranty paid for I have had a high rpm misfire. Recently I found the since they shaved twenty five thousandths from the heads I needed to go from the 764 autolites to a 103. Problem went away, like a new car. The shop that did my repair said they see quite a few of the dohc engines w/bad gaskets.

My 2001 supercharged gt started knocking and I had to have it towed to a diablo dealership. They pulled the spark plugs and 2 of them were bent, they then stuck a camera down in where the spark plugs go. The pistons had holes burnt right through them. Try taking it some where like that where they can stick a camera down in there and get a good look.
