Default head question

What are some typical signs of a valve seal going bad? I was told I could have one going. Every once in awhile it will blow a cloud of smoke on start-up, it has a misfire every now and then at like 1800 rpm, and it has a tick that can be heard under the car and through the exhaust. Wires are good and it just had brand new plugs and that didnt help anything. Thanks in advance for the help! oh P.S. 1999 Cobra vert

Is the only fix for that to just get the heads reworked?
