I have a 1999 mustang cobra convertible. I want to up grade my stock exhaust for best hp and sound, but I don't want it to be so loud that I can't hear with the top down. What would be the best exhaust to go with. And if I were to upgrade the mid pipe and headers would I want to go with the same brand as the exhuast or should I look mix and match.
Nobody is responding because of the caveat (not too loud with the top down). There are web sites with sound clips, but your best bet is to listen to cars you like the sound of and ask the owners what they have. I'm sure there is a mustang club or show regularly meeting in you area. Personally I went cheap but effective on my 03 Cobra; stock headers (so I can bolt back my factory cats if needed) UPR uncatted "X" and a MAC cat back. My car roars like a NASCAR but that's what I wanted. Start off with a cat back and you can always build forward from there. MAC is on the inexpensive end of the scale Flowmaster in the middle and Borla, Bassani are on the other. I really don't care if my exhaust is stainless or aluminized, nobody can fit under my car to see and they all look rusted after a few years anyway. If you want a bling bling killer name exhaust to throw out names Kooks or SLP is supposed to be the best on headers. Go Borla or Bassani the rest of the way and you can impress the name conscious folks here (you'll have nearly $2000 in exhaust). If you are budgeted more tightly, go MAC. I got my catback for around $350 and was able to get a Steeda Triax as well for just a little over $500 total.
I put a S/S Magnapack cat back system on my 2003 GT GT convertible - also have Saleen series IV supercharger... the sound, well it does have several sweet spots mostly above 3/4 throttle in the 3000+ rpm range. For just tooling around or cruising down the road, in that case the sound becomes quite fatiguing. As far as any performance boost - I have not dyno'd with the Magnapack cat-back system. The stock headers, h-pipe and cats are still in-place, so whatever HP gains might be I am sure it is only slight.
Good luck - if I knew then what I know now... would have gone for quieter system. BTW, I got the new Maganpack system on Ebay for "best offer" of $375 last year.
I just put on a set of Kooks full lenght headers and off road x-pipe on my 04 cobra. I love the way it sounds. It is on the loud side, but you can still carry on a conversation. Just with a slighty raised voice, but my car is a coupe not a vert.
Just a small warning if you plan installing the headers on your own be aware that you have to raise the motor a couple of inches and then drop the k-member, this way you have enough room to put the headers on. Kooks headers go on one tube at a time. Passenger side goes on from back to front, and driver side is just the opposite. It may sound like a pain in the neck but it actually not that bad. I was going to pay someone to put the headers on but, when they said it would cost $500. I said f-it and put them on myself.
Oh yeah I also have two chamber flowmasters. I left the stock tail pipes.

hi i have a 2001 svt cobra i have to flowmasters on it and sounds nice not to lund but still iu want to be lound just give it gas i would go with a catback system wit flowmasters
I have a Magnaflow catted X mid-pipe and Magnaflow cat back. It is pretty quiet in cruising situations, but once the tach passes 3,000 it is a different sound altogether. I was initially a little surprised at how quiet the idle was, but I'm now glad for it, since it cuts down on unwanted attention from law enforcement officers.
mod motor mustangs sound soo sweet even stock, i think that any system you get will be louder than stock but still sound really sweet. i personally like the quieter systems.
Borla sounds sweet, and dynomax sounds just a little louder than stock, but you can definately tell.

I have a Dr. Gas o/r X and Magnaflow cat-back...it sounds AWESOME. It doesn't drone when you're crusing but when you even half throttle it up through the RPMs and it hits 3800 on up to about 4600 it just sings...sounds like an exotic!
I have installed a Borla exhaust system in my mustang cobra and it sounds good and looks nice on the car.
Borla have two kind of exhausts for cobra. if you dont want loud sound then dont buy the aggressive one, buy the other one.
Anyone that has the Magnapack installed, or had it installed, a friend of mine with a 97 Cobra is wanting to know what the interior noise level is like? Does it over power conversation, or stereo?

i have an o/r bbk H now with magnapacks... its loud but its not too bad. i can still hear my stereo and talk to the passengers in my car but if it were dumped under my car it would be too loud. make them go out the tail and you will be ok
