Default A puff of smoke at startup

Once in a while at startup i have a puff of white smoke coming out of my tailpipe........like i said its only once in a while not everytime i start the car up...........Is this something i should look into to? I was told its nothing to worry about unless it is doing it everytime i start up the car or during acceleration.........what do people think?

White smoke is water, you shouldnt have anything to worry about unless its blue smoke, then thats oil.

Default smoke on startup

Take a look at your oil & coolant, if the levels are dropping or either doesn't look right you might have the first indication of a failing head gasket.

well my coolant level is fine and has no oil in it.........my oil does seem to burn about 1 quart every 3000 miles even though there is no sign of leaking or heavy smoking all the time out the tailpipe. I was told from FORD that the oil burning is within spec.........i have a 1998 mustang cobra.

Then in that case it might be your seals going bad. Leaking a little oil and burning it while your driving. Its nothing to realy worry about, I mean yea get it fixed but as long as you keep the oil up you should be ok.

Yeah. I would agree. I thought it was something you started once a week, in that case it would be absolutely nothing to worry about imho, not that it seems too serious anyway.

Do any of you guys have a 4.6 liter cobra that consumes oil.....i posted this question on here but like i said i have to add about 1-1.5 quarts between my 3000 mile oil changes. There is no leaking of oil or smoke on startup all the time......just once in awhile..........i have asked 4 ford dealerships and they are telling me it is normal to be consuming up to 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles according to Ford Motor Company....so i am within spec. Some mustang owners agree and some say to do a compression and/or leakdown test that its not normal. What should i do?

bro that's not normal, this is my second Cobra and this one is far from stock on the stock motor and I never have to add oil.

Should i do a compression and/or leakdown test? I asked the dealer how much to have these tests done.........he asked what the problem was........i told him my car consumes oil........and thats when he said according to Ford Motor Company its within spec to consume 1 quart every 900 miles and that if i came in with this problem they would bother looking at it........all the Dealers have told me this..........i asked why to some people with Cobras consume no oil. He said not all engines will but some will consume oil and some wont but it doesnt warrant a problem.

He even said that he will provide me with the paper from Ford Motor Company stating this if i want to see it.

I dont understand........i pulled every plug out that has been in the car since it was new.........it now has 69,0000 miles on it........no oil on the plugs........no oil leaking on the ground overnight or leaking around the valve covers from up top........no smoke coming out the tailpipe at startup or during my drive...........only like once in a while like i said. What else could it be? What will doing a compression/leakdown test tell me? Is it worth doing? Like i said the dealer immediately cut me off and said i dont need one done that it is within Ford spec.

Not to be ass like at all, but "according to Ford Motor Company" means Sh$t, according to them, "spark knock" or Detonation is "normal", go figure...
