Default 03 Cobra Overheating, first time ever!

I have an 03 Cobra with 12000 miles. Last summer I added a 2.93 pulley, and a K and N cold air kit. I also have flowmasters, and a Diablo Sport chip. All last year it ran fine, all this summer it ran fine. Never over the mid way point. Tonight, I was going to see a frind, and the A/C dies. Then, boiling coolant.

I changed the ts, but it still is overheating. It runs at the mid way point for about ten minutes, then just jumps to the deep red.

I am in the bad boat of no warranty coverage due to the mods, which really pisses my wife off, so I am trying to figure this out. I have never had the coolant open, and no leaks. Could an air bubble be the prob? how do I eliminate it as a culprit? What is the process of burbing the system?

The only thing differnt is that I went to a race day at a local track, and filled up with 100 octane Sunoco racing fule, but have also done that before (last year) and suffered nothing.

All the dams are in palce, and everyting else is fine. I think it is a second run, so don't think I have the head issue. How do I know for sure what run mine is?

Please help, my wife will love you.

I know you said you replaced the thermostat but it sounds like it isn't opening when it should. Is it possible you put it in backwards? I would check your radiator for debris (a plastic bag, dead critter, bugs), and spray it out. Flush your system and replace with new coolant. Replace that thermostat again just in case it was faulty.

Thank you, I will try it. DOes anyone know how to burp the system to prevent the air pocket thing?

You have to leave the cap off well into operating temp. Turn the heater on full. I'd say it wouldn't hurt to rock the car a little side to side and squeeze the upper or lower hoses. I don't guess the water pump could be bad?

Inquiring minds want to know. Did you put the stat in upside down or was the system full of air?

Not sure yet, I know I put it in the correct direction, but nver bled the system. I am going to redo the entire thing this Saturday, and prey for the best. Do you know of anything else it could be? Perhaps the head issue? Water pump? Perhaps I will just do as you have advised, and then go from there.

Did you check the fan operation? Burned up/ clogged up cats? Why do you think the AC quit working??? Fuse?

The main reason a Cobra is going to over heat is because you didn't burp the system correctly.

I agree with the last post. It is easy to mess this up. It is the cheapest fix if this is the problem. Try this before you go any further. Burp the baby. Remember to turn that heater on full to fill the core and let her run with the cap off.

Hey man... I have a 95 cobra svt and the same thing happened to me. I replaced the thermostat and did everything else that you checked on yours. I found out that on my car it was the water pump. Before I replaced it, it was doing the same thing yours was.

on a cobra when you replace the Thermostat, you are required to bleed the system or it will overheat.

Just had a customer come in today that only got about 5 min on the road before it started to overheat on him after he replaced it himself.

So he called us while on the road wanting to come in for us to look at it. Easy fix & easy for those that never done it before to do.

I'm going through almost the same thing with a '96er if it helps.... I've changed the water pump, changed the thermostat, flushed the system, and even tried water wetter to no avail. I'm going for a fluidyne radiator next probably. Big difference between us though, is I've got over 110k miles on mine. I've burped the car three times in a row to the point that no more air comes out, but still runs hot. I'll post back in a week or so when I order the radiator and let you know if that did any thing for me.
