Hello everyone,
I am buying an '04 cobra with bassani x, borla cat, accufab tb, 2.8" upper pulley, predator pretune for pulley and fipk. it only has 6k miles on it. The guy told me he has gone through 3 belts on this thing. Is that normal? what would cause this? was also wondering what i need to do to my rear-end/irs to handle the horsepower and maybe run it at the track every now and then...thank you in advance!
Belts dont last long on some roots/screw type SC instalations, the problem seems to be long distances between some of the pulleys, that makes the belt stretch and jump out. A fix is an extra idler pulley.
About suspension, check the Steeda website, they have some good stuff there:
Cobra Differential Bushings: 99-04
Cobra IRS Cross Member: 99-01
Cobra IRS CA Bushings: 99-04
Cobra Subframe Bushings: 99-04
thanks man, guess i will see whats involved in an extra idler pulley. so those bushing are all i should need for a strong IRS? Thats not so bad. i have heard of people swapping for solid axles.
You'll destroy the value if you switch to solid. If you are a hardcore drag racer....go for it. If you intend to drag occaisionally and mostly street the car, leave the IRS alone. There are ways to make the IRS more drag race friendly.
no, i am not a hard core drag racer....just enjoy the track sometimes. how do i strenghen the IRS? just with the bushings mentioned above? thanks again
I also have a 04 cobra and it almost 11k miles on it and I have had the 2.8 pulley for about 8k of those miles and I still have same belt. But when I changed the upper pulley I also added the aux. idler. Most people that swap out the irs for a solid axle are the people who spend most of their time at drag strip. The irs is more for the street car, swapping out the bushings is not only a great to help the car hook up but is a whole cheaper than swapping out the irs for a solid axle. On a side note if you ever decide to change wheels and tires I would think about going up a couple sizes on the rear. I personally went from 17x9 all the way around to 18x8.5 up front and 18x10 out back, on the tires I went with 275/35 front and 295/35 out back. The car hooks very very good.
My friend has a '03 Cobra that he drag races frequently. I think he's making like 550 HP and is putting on a Kenne Bell soon and will be well over 600 HP afterwards. He is running the IRS that he strengthened with aftermarket halfshafts, a bushing kit, and maybe some other things, I can't remember for sure now. He says it's good for like 800 HP or so. I was hoping he would swap me for my 8.8", but he had already done all the upgrades to his IRS.
