Default 97 Cobra runs hot in the summer

I have a 97 Cobra. It runs hot in the summer only (I live in Houston).
It does not have the air dam under the front bumper. Is this required for cooling, could it be the problem?
Thanks for advance.

Maybe but the thermostat maybe messed up. Have you replaced that. Or maybe your fan is not kicking on

Both valid points. I plan to replace the thermostat with a 180 next week, I will check the fan at the same time (the car is currently several hundred miles away). I just want to have it fixed prior to the hot season, and was wondering if the air dam was an integral part of the cooling process.

The 96's were notorious for running hot, but the 97's were supposed to be better. Alot of people still upgrade the radiator. Does it overheat, or just run in the high/normal range?
