Question Beefing up the IRS on a 2004 Cobra. Is this overkill, or just about right?

Hi guys, I've read a few articles about broken half shafts on a SVT Cobra. I even have a friend who has broken one of his shafts. With several modifications on the way for my Cobra, should I be worried about beefing up the IRS? I found a list of items another Cobra owner used to beef up his IRS. Is this overkill, or just about right?

If you want dependability go with a solid axle design and it will not give you a I hope it does not break thought. You can get a strange axle compleate for way less than 3800.00

The longevity of the stock IRS is a crap shoot. I guess it just depends on how you drive and much time you spend at the track. The straight axle is good if you spend a lot of time at the track. I have a friend who is a avid drag racer and he agrees with me. I tend to trust his opinion. If you have been to many FFW or NMRA events you have heard his name, Robert Hindman.

I don't go to the track at all JD04COBRA, so do you think its still needed? I've read that "wheel hop" actually happens more on the street then on the track. I have a friend who has a 04 Cobra, and he says that as long as you keep Traction control on, wheel hop won't happen. What do you think?

Leaving the traction control will eliminate wheel hop but it will also hurt acceleration. Seeing how you don't go to the track I would think the list above is overkill. To help with wheel hop you could try having differrent bushings installed. I have heard positive things about using Delrin bushings. Maybe even upper control arms. Just throwing out ideas. I have not done any of these myself though.

Good luck.

Traction control switch? Whats that? My light stays on but its because of the chip I have. I changed all the bushings and added a brace on the rear end cover. If your racing with slicks, go with a solid. If you want good handling and a good ride, keep the IRS. With me, its a fine line with the hop. I don't think you can get it all out.

There's a great post (assuming you haven't already encountered it) at the SVT Performance forum called The Red Pill:
http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...d.php?t=231900

Has fantastic prioritized listing of IRS mods all cobra owners should make. Haven't seen a post yet that beats it!
