Default How to power starter for compression test?

I am just about to do a compression test on my 01 Cobra - I am blowing smoke like mad and need to begin the diagnostic process. I have purchased the Ford shop manual for the car (very handy) and under the compression test heading it says:

"Install an auxillary starter switch in the the starting circuit"

...but does not further explain this procedure - I have a decent idea how to do it but a second opinion is always in order. I do not want to fry anything.

I have heard conflicting remarks as to bypassing the relay vs. having a friend turn the key while compression is monitored. Advice or suggestions...

Thanks,

I would just use the ignition key honestly. Make sure all the plugs are removed so there's no chance of the car firing. You don't even need a friend to turn the key as long as you have a compression tester that will hold the highest reading until you let it down.
