Question Catalytic Converter Failed! Should I replace ONE or BOTH on my 1994 Cobra?

My knowledge in auto mechanics is embarrassing. One of the the two catalytic converter failed (Converter Meltdown.) from road damage on my 1994 FORD MUSTANG COBRA. Can I just replace the one that failed, or does both have to be replaced? Is there a performance difference in a $80 catalytic converter and $160? Does the catalytic converter and the different types, have any part in the sound of the exhaust?

You could probably replace just the one that failed but I would definately replace both. If one failed, the other is most likely not too far behind. Labour cost is also cheaper if you replace both at the same time as opposed to getting them replaced seperately. High flow catalytic converters are the way to go if you are looking to increase performance. If you can afford to, this is a good time to consider going with a good quality high performance cat back system like those offered by Borla or Magnaflow. You will get a nice sounding exhaust, a healthy increase in performance and a trouble free exhaust for quite some time. You are driving a Cobra Mustang and to me would make it a good investment.

Hope this is of some help.

Hey guys,
MAybe you can help me. I have 2001 convertible mustang. Don't know anything about cars. So recently the performance become very poor and I hear some noise. The car seems sluggish...I went to firestone. THey killed me with the price for replacing catalytic converter :
Direct fit cat converter $1,037.75
remove & replace catalytic converter 85.50
Does it really costs THAT MUCH?!
I' was looking online, and the highest price I saw was like under $500 plus Sh&H like $22.
Should I look for some other deal? Or should I believe firestone?
I wish I can do all fixing on my own.

Thanks,

I would just take them off and keep them off. I have 10 series flowmasters and no cats on my 94 cobra and I've only ever heard one 03/04 cobra that sounded just a bit better than mine.

You can get a Pypes high flow catalytic converter from www.pypesexhaust.com for about $100.
