Guys, I had a run in with a Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee today. I experienced a smell that I've never smelled before. Its hard to describe. It wasn't a burnt smell, more like the smell of "friction". Is that common?
My car was doing about 100 MPH in 5th gear. I've heard about the smell of "fried clutch material", but I don't know if this happened. I did not hit the rev limiter, so I know the engine isn't damaged. It could of meant that I burned the clutch a little as I was getting her up to 5th gear. However, when you push a vehicle close to the Red Line, is there a smell that comes with it?
There's no problem though, the car idles, and starts just fine. I did not witness this smell when I raced a EVO last year.

2 questions:
1. are you sure it was comming from your car?
2. Did it smell like brakes?
If the answer to 2 is yes, it was probably clutch.

I am POSITIVE it was coming from my car. I believe the engine. In your opinion Nyt_Muves, what's the difference between the smell of fried brakes, and a fried clutch?

Honestly not much. They are pretty similar material. The clutch is a little more acrid. And it really stinks. It dosent smell like hot motor or anything electrical.
Had you had any recent fluid changes? Any chance you spilled anything under the hood topping off? If so it could have been a little bit of something burning off.

You know, I think I need to have the fluids changed. I purchased this car from someone else. I did an oil change. Thats it. The car only had 3838 miles when I got it. It was weird, as soon as I slowed down and opened the windows, the smell never came back. It crossed my mind that the previous owner removed the revlimiter, and I redlined without knowing it. I think it was something internal, because I can't smell it from the outside of the engine.
If it was clutch you would probably know it, even if you didnt know the smell. Its absolutely terrible. Its funny because just the other day my buddy wound his car out on the highway (an Intrepid though lmao) and it made an odd small ive never smelled before either. Of course, his car isnt made to hit 100 lmao.

if you think about it 100mph isnt much, so there shouldnt be damage anywhere, the smell is prob the clutch getting warm
