Hello everyone. I just bought my first Mustang since I sold my 66 fastback in 1976. I bought a 99 Cobra, so I will be burning this board up over the next few months learning, and hopefully helping someone along the way.
I didn't get an owners manual with the car, and I have no idea what fluids are required for the Cobra. I always start out changing all the drive train fluids so I know for sure when it was done. Can some tell me the differential, transmission, and engine oil recommendations/requirments? I normally use Mobil 1 full, but if FoMo Co is better I can do that too.
Thanks
Jim
Mobil1 or Royal Purple motor oil, 5w30, 6 qts. although some people use 6.5.
Royal Purple Max gear lube, 75w90, 3 qts. fill until you reach the fill hole. Also add one bottle of friction modifier. Before changing the gear lube, decide if your gonna do a gear swap, which I highly suggest.
Royal Purple Manual Synchromax manual transmission fluid, 4 qts, fill until you reach the fill hole.
Yes, they are all full synthetic. RP is a personal preference, but you will find that many people on this site recommend it. Ford usually only recommends Motorcraft (they own it)!

typical ford stunt right there haha... never use ford shiit unless you are buying replacement parts that you cant find anywhere else.(little word of advice) always look for aftermarket stuff and if you can find it from another place besides ford then get that. oh also.. redline MTL transmission fluid is one of the best as well.
haha i suppose the arent bad i was just always told to buy aftermarket products when possible. i wasnt ford bashing at all haha as i drive a ford you know, that whole story
I stopped by my local Ford dealer for a $75.00 spare key and a blower motor resistor, and I asked about fluids while I was there. I guess the 99 differential takes a heavier gear oil because he told be to use 75W140, and automatic transmission fluid in the gearbox. I'm also hearing 5W20 for the engine oil from Ford owning friends, but I'm not sure on that one. So if anyone has their 1999 owners manual handy please let me know what the book says.
A seller on Ebay has shop manuals on CD for the Cobras for $2.99, looks good, but I'll let you know for sure when it gets here.

k do this because different people are telling you different things... go to like pep boys or napa auto or something and get one of those mustang maintenance books. or dont even buy it just look through it. putting the right kind of fluids in your car, as you probably already know, is one of the most important things to do. it is VITAL you use proper fluids. also just a side note, 75W140 sounds like a transmission fluid spec not rear end gear oil. go get one of those books though it will tell you exactly everything you need to know
You've all been a big help so far, and I appreciate it. Hopfully I can get it all together soon. Ford told me I need a battery also. By a used car and you get hours of enjoyment out of it just putting you hands on it.

I have the owners manual for my 99 cobra, and it recommends 5W30. As far as the gear oil, I went with the 75W140; Im not saying that is necessarily "the way to go" but im pleased with mine.

Okay guys I up on jack stands, short of using a vacuum pump what's the story on getting the differential fluid drained? It looks like it's impossible to get the cover off without dropping the entire differential.
If you know something that will help me right away my cell # is 859-391-5663
Thanks

as far as i know you should be able to get the cover off without dropping the rear end off of the car. not entirely sure though because mine is solid axle 98 so its exposed and easy to get to
