Ok, I have a 97 Mustang Cobra, and I'd like to put the muffler system and H pipe and all that stuff on it, and make it louder and "more powerful," but then someone told me that if you take out the original muffler system and stuff, then you will LOSE hp.
I told my friend this and he laughed. He's my technical guy, and he said that was the most absurd thing he'd ever heard. But my friend said that Cobras are specifically tuned a certain way to get optimum performance. Can someone give me the real scoop on this?!?!

True, he fed you a bunch of bologna!!! A X-pipe or larger H-pipe is the cheapest way to free up some horse power!!! Don't forget to get a bettet air filter or Cold air induction to go with it.

My buddy has a 98 Cobra with a Tri-Ax shifter, off-road x-pipe, flowmaster cat-back, and a Steeda timing adjuster. He dyno'd at 291hp at the wheels and has run a 13.5 at the 1/4 mile on the tires the car came with from the dealership. He has no expierence of drivning at the drag strip and should be able to get a much lower time than that. What are the 2003 Cobra's running? Like 12.87? Later.

I talked to my buddy today and he said that his car dyno'd at 271 to the wheels. The time is right though. He ran a 13.5. I am probably above that level and am really anxious to get my car on the 1/4 mile. Later.

What your friend may have said was, if you remove the cats and go with a bigger exhaust, you might, i emphasize might lose some low end torque. However losing hp is not the case. My car has a shifter, mufflers, and a filter and ran a 13.88@101.41. I then put in a Mac off road h pipe and now i run a 13.69@103.73. I cant wait for my pulleys, timing adjuster, maf, and 4.30's.
Like everyone else said, you'll make HP not lose.
I made 18 HP with a Bassani Cat Back and K&N Filtercharger.
On Saturday I put stock exhaust back on and the car feels slower.(No brainer)
I have a '97 Cobra coupe with the following mods:
MAC full length headers
MAC Hi-flow H-Pipe (yes with cats to stay legal)
Borla CatBack Side Exhaust
BBK 70mms throttle body
K&N air filter
3.75 gears
Pro5.0 stick
CobraR replica wheels 9" front & 11" rear - so 245 fonts and 315 rears
I had not had it dynoed before these modifications but after the modifications the dyno was 280rwhp 280rwt
Before the 315 tires, BBK and MAC parts the 1/4 time was 14.1 (no claim to be good in the 1/4 here)
After teh BBK and MAC parts the car felt much more powerful. And the sound was much deeper and louder.
Someone said it and he is right. You lose a litte low end tourque when removing the cats but you'll gain high end hp. Also you might through a check engine light when removing the cats which will cause the computer to decrease the timing, but those problems can be easily avoided by using mil eliminators.
The only thing I lost with a cat-back on the 01, and now the 04 was the silence. Best of all, I can still hear the whine of the supercharger. This 04 is a blast to drive
