Exclamation 1996 Mustang Cobra Clutch Change Please Help!

I just got a 1996 Mustang Cobra-SVT couple of days ago finally part of the Mustang family. But as soon as i got it i had doubt s about the clutch sometimes it is hard to get it to the reverse gear and 1st. also clutch pedal is too hard. What should i do change the clutch? If the answer is yes there is some aftermarket clutches like King Cobra should go for them or should i use the original Ford kit same as the factory clutch.Maybe the problem is not the clutch i am just guessing please some one help.
Thanks.

King Cobra is a good clutch, and would be just as good as a factory clutch. there are lots of reasons why your pedal is heavy.
it could be
1. Heavy pressure plate already installed
2. worn clutch cable
3. worn/no grease on the input bearing retainer

as for difficult to get into gear it could be
1. no lube on input shaft/clutch disc binding on input shaft
2. low oil in trans
3. loose bellhousing bolts
4. bent shift forks
5. shifter

likely your problems will be fixed with a clutch or clutch cable.

you can either replace the flywheel or have it resurfaced by a machine shop. if you are goin to get a clutch cable get a new Ford cable. check out Maximum Motorsports :: The Leader In Mustang Performance Suspensions for their clutch cable kits.

The transmission is a T45. The factory flywheel will take a 10.5" clutch. You can also purchase a kit that contains the stock '99 flywheel, 11" clutch disc and pressure plate. Check out 50resto - Latemodel Mustang Parts & Accessories for the kit.

back up now guys.....When I first purchase my mustang, I thought the same thing. My 96 z28 had a easy clutch and shifted great. When I got into the stang, it was a harder clutch and getting it into reverse is always a challenge. I have owned three stangs, and my memory came back. This is normal on the stang trannys. You cannot speed shift the t45 either.

Maybe explain "clutch is to hard" My leg was tired after purchasing the cobra. It just took some getting used to, my clutch is fine though....for now. Also, the trick to getting it into reverse. When you come to a stop, push the clutch in, put it in first gear, then immediately shift to reverse ( do not let the clutch out or you start over) also, make sure you have it is reverse, do not be scared to pull back hard when going into reverse.

Good luck!

If you do opt to change your clutch DONT waste your money on a factory clutch. Get a preformance clutch, or you will be doin it again soon. Trust me, I know. Upgrade, dont downgrade. My mechanic said I would tear my transmision up before the clutch. My 96 is the same as for as reverse being a pain. How many miles do you have on the car? If there are high miles you might as well change it if you have to pull the tranny. It might save you in some labor down the road. It could be the syncrinizers in the trans also. Mine went at about 80,000 miles. Anyhow good luck, hope it is something simple.

Yea Flame you right i aint gonna waste my money on the factory clutch i surely will upgrade it.Icome across with Clutchmaster clutches they are so expensive i think i am gonna go with the King Cobra Clutch kit and a short shift made by MAC i guess. My stang has 53,000 miles on it approximately.and some knocking kinda noises coming out from the transsmision or from the clutch i hope it will stop after i change the clutch kit.

Thanks for the reverse gear tips Rich.

Default Clutch problem

Hey Rich,
I suspect you still have a problem. I recently replaced a clutch in a similar car. When disassembled and inspected there were several fingers broken off the pressure plate. The release bearing was toast and the fork was missing half of its clip. Once replaced with a Center force disk, pressure plate and bearing/fork the car could be speed shifted or power shifted with ease. Reverse was also no problem. Right side BBK long tube will have to be removed to get the trans out. Remove shock tower brace on top and right side engine mount to lift/rock engine to remove BBK right side. Also the flywheel may be machined instead of replaced. Of course this is my 2 cents and my personal experience. Hope this helps. Good luck. Very cool car!

Red face

I ordered King Cobra Clutch, a BM short shift and a clutch cable it cost me about 1000$ some of you gonna think its a rip off but beleive me with the taxes and cutoms the price is up to this.
You guys are so lucky to be in Usa and modify your stang just wanna let you guys know. It is so expensive to mod a American muscle up in here no matter what i dun care it is a privilige to cruise with a Mustang and its even better if its moded. I am done with the tune compact cars they look like toy cars after i heard my Cobra s growl.

Peace out.
