Hi, My name is Jaime from Mexico. I own this 96 Cobra Stock, just bought, so I dont have specifications of any kind. And I would like to encrease power and speed for 1/4 mile and still been street car.
Some one told me to change gear ring and pinion, and I know as a stock cobra 96 has the 3:73 gear, but what size of diameter?
7.5 or 8.80 inches? and also, what do you recomend? to buy 4:10 or 4:56 gear?
Please, some member can tell me the especifications? and what else should i do? change tire size, program computer, etc?
Actually, you have 3.27 gears stock. You have a 8.8" rearned, and with that cobra I suggest FRPP 4.30 gears.
To adjust the speedometer, you'll need a speedcal (can be purchased from dallas mustang, or Brothers performance), or a white 23 tooth speed gear will work as well.
mark is completely right......except the 4:30. They are to much for the street. Mine is 4:10 and I have to watch my red line all the time and have been in the red a couple of times. 3:73 will be enough for the track and street. Now, if you have no money for upgrades, go with the 4:30 and shift every mili sec, get poor gas mileage on the highways and gain what a mili sec in the 1/4 mile????? WOW! stick with 3:73
Just my two cents.

thanks ryan for the kind words. I have 4:10's and they are way to much for street driving. Great for the track, but sucks for the road. 3:73 would be great for track and street. One of the problems that I am facing now, is the fact I have a stock radiator and in the summers in TN. The temp above 100 degrees, and the tach on the interstate, and it stays around 3 grand above the car wants to overheat. I have to cut the heat on, roll the windows down, etc. to cool her down.
Anytime you modify your car, look out for other problems to arrive. Yesterday, someone installed a after market kit & K& N filter, I could not remove it to clean it. So I had to clean it while inside the fender well.
Ryan is a great guy, he has some great advice also!
Rich

Hi and thanks for advice, So, Rich, Do you think if i upgrade radiator for coolest temp and install a 4:10 gear would be ok? or i would stick to 3:73 only, like you said before?
Right now my cobra is crashed at the front, so im on restoration. And when i finish restoring it, I will start buying all stuff to encrease power and speed, so it will take me one month to make up my mind of purchasing whats best for it.
Here are some videos of this cobra before the accident, also you can find me on youtube as renaultazul, regards
nope, I am having to put a clutch in this weekend, then brakes. Since it is winter in TN, I am going to wait till the first of next year. I heard that my current radiator has alot of plastic. I will try and upgrade next year.
Anytime I have modified my car, I have had to compensate by adding other modify parts to compensate for my modified car! HAHA!! if that makes sense! HAHA!!
Do not get me wrong, 4:10 are great gears for the track racing. It is the best way to get a quick start out of the hole. But for everyday use, they are alittle to much. If it bothered me that much about getting my crap eat up. I would supercharge my car, or put a 80-100 shot of nitrous.
Good luck,
Rich

On the highway 3:73 are going to help your MPG. My old bolt on, untuned 97 GT had 3:73s and I got 26 mpg going 75 mph with the air on. The steeper gears get the revs in the sweet spot. Also less pedal is needed to get the car moving in town. Its your choice how fast you want to accelerate. I don't have any personal experience with the 4:10s but others have had the same results.

That white 23 tooth gear, will last about 1 month before it starts coming apart on you, Mike.
I have 4.10'S, in my 96 COBRA and I can squeeze 20mpg. in the city. Reason, you can get it in 5th gear without lugging it. And it depends, how heavy your right foot is. I also have 3.90's, in the 04 MACH 1 and get 21 city, and 26mpg highway, Mike
Yeah, the same as I do. Finnaly put the 4.10 gears and Im very happy with it. I have to admit that 4.10 gears are dangerous for street but funny hahaha. I try always to keep low revs and gain gas meleage. Also a pair of sliks for track and good enogh tires for street. 125 HPs nitrous shot, under pulley kit and K&N air filter.
Also have the sniper programmer but had problems tunning. I dont know why yet, just dont works.
Next step are headers and forged metals for a bigger shot of nitrous.
Ill let you know, and thanks for advices....regards
4.30s will still net you 22mpg Highway.
80mph = 3000rpm
65mph = 2400rpm.
They ae TOTALLY streetable.
Changing the speedo gear is NOT accurate with 4.10s or 4.30s. In order to simply swap the speedo gear, you need to swap the internal drive gear for the sppedo too. This is located in the trans. Otherwise, the reading on the tach/speedo is not accurate, plus the speedo gear will just strip.
