I love it when you younger guys are eager to learn! It helps keep the Mustang tradition going! Start with a CAI (cold air intake) and get a tune. Tuner and intake kits are $500 to $700. Custom shops can do the tune for I think $40 or $50 if you dont wanna buy your own tuner. The CAI is $150 to $300 by itself. If you have stock exhaust, you could get a nice dual setup (a couple hp gain)for $400 to $600. I myself have a single Flowmaster American Thunder muff on mine, sounds MUCH better than stock. Check out California Mustang Parts - Order classic Ford mustang parts, accessories, gifts and more. and CJ Pony Parts - Ford Mustang Parts for some ideas.. Happy Modding!

Like jmmckay said, the tune would be your best bet. If you end up not being able to afford an exhaust after your CIA/Tune, just do the good old fashion "removal of muffler" =). I am not keeping my current mustang too much longer so that's what I did and I LOVE it!

One thing.. If you do take off the muffler, try to find a way to mount the hanging exhaust somewhere or just remove the whole thing. On some freeways around Vegas I tend to get a cloncking sound =(

See what I underlined? This is bad advice, your car will sound horrible.

If you can manage this in your budget, get exhaust (05+ pypes mid muffler system has to be the best sounding on the 4.0L) A Cold air intake (JLT) and a Tuner (SCT XCAL).

This is also a good package: VMP Tuning - Buy Ford SCT & GM Custom Handheld Flash Tuners Performance Economy Towing: 05-08 Mustang V6 Custom SCT X-Cal2 or X3 Flasher and VMP Intake

Pypes mid muffler system can be found here:
Products and Services

This is the JLT if you chose to go this route:
Stage 3 Motorsports 2005-07 Mustang V6 JLT Cold Air Intake

And this is the xcal:
VMP Tuning - Buy Ford SCT & GM Custom Handheld Flash Tuners Performance Economy Towing: SCT X-Calibrator 2 & 3 Flashers

Justin @ VMP is THE MAN when it comes to v6 tuning.
