Default 1996 Mustang Hood, Fiberglass is cracked

Hi All,

I'm new to this and hope I am posting in the right place. I just purchased a 96 Mustang V6 Automatic for my daughter. I need to do something with the hood. It is cracked on the top surface across the area where the hood latch is. It's pretty bad. I need to fix it but am new to these cars.

Is the entire hood made of fiberglass or is there a layer of fiberglass over a steel base? It looks as if there is airspace between the thin fiber layer and the base. Is that normal? I believe that to fix this I am going to have to cut out the top layer and use fiberglass to build it up and shape it properly.

Just looking for a little advice. I like the car; it's fun to drive. She's excited about it, but the cracked hood is an eyesore. Thanks everyone.

It should be a fiberglass covering over a metal frame. You could use mess and epoxy o fix it. or just get a new one. You can find some nice ones at Mr Body Kits.com

Thanks for the information. I thought that was steel underneath. I'll try my hand at repairing it first I think; since I emptied my bank account to buy the car (and daughter #2, who "owns" this car now, doesn't yet have a job). Thanks again.

If the crack is large, it would probably be cheaper to find a new hood. I cracked my hood about 3 inches high in the winter when my car kissed a tree. I ended up just getting a new hood.

Another thing you might look at if you are on a budget is a take off hood. Some guys that buy a replacement hood, like I want to do (I'm lookin at the ram air II hood) will sell the original hood for a discounted price. Once I get mine that's what I will do with mine, and you can find one in good condition cheap. Look in the classifieds here, I have seen some in there.

Default Thank you everyone!

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I think I'll try to repair it; while looking for a "take-off" hood. This is a great forum with some very nice people. Thanks again.
