i should be only held on with 3M tape and there shouldnt be any holes behind it. dont hold me to it tho. you can heat it up with a heat gun or blow dryer and peal it off if thats the case. a plastic scraper will help

My Stang has those aswell, and it was definately not a rental... I was told that they were to help protect your car from cars parked beside you that open their doors too wide and hit the side... sort of like a dent-guard.

This is exactly what they are. These were not put on only rental cars, they were and option as well.
