Unhappy Weak Acceleration

I have a 2002 V6. Most of the time when I accelerate, it takes a while to get some speed. Sometimes as I'm accelerating, I hear what sounds like a backfire, a deep 'poof' 'pop' sound, sometimes from under the hood. When I brake to a stop, my RPM's go down under 1K, and it shakes a little like it wants to turn off, then it idles fine. Is there anyone out there who could help me diagnose what is going on with my Mustang?
