Default My son's '99 doesn't start with a spare key..

Hello everyone,

The only key my son has for his '99 V6 Mustang broke yesterday inside the trunk's lock. Today I was able of removing the broken piece inside. Last year I had a couple of copies made at a local hardware store, but the car won't start with any of those keys.
Someone told me that the Mustang key has a sensor that trigger the ingition system. So, I tried to hold the black plastic piece of the original key next to the spare key while trying to start the engine and it started. I tried few more times but it didn't start every time although the engine turns.

I have a couple of questions if you can help:

(1) Does the key has indeed a sensor?
(2) If so, can this sensor be bypassed perhaps by removing a fuse?
(3) If I need to make a new key could you suggest how and where?
I heard that a local dealer charges $150 for a new key and
I'm not even sure if that would includse programming it if neeed
so. I would prefer the option to bypass it if possible.

Thank you very much for any comment/suggestion.

Peter

You will need a new key called a "PATS" key and will need to be programmed by a Ford dealer. We charge 50 bucks and a half hour to hook up and access to program the key. Holding the key close to the new one you had made might work, accept you need to keep it there when the engine is running. Try taping it the the column cover next the ignition cylinder and see if it start and run. If not you will need to have the car towed and then get the corrrect PATS keys programmed. You will need a minimun of two keys for the system to program the keys correctly. Once you have two properly programmed keys you can program additional key (up to 8 total) yourself. I have three keys for my own Mustang.

We only have ONE broken key. Are you saying we need a new lock because we don't have a minimum of two keys?

you should be able to take the copy (that dosen't work) and bring the fragment of the old key, to a(n) (especially) larger Ford dealership and they should be able to help you get a new key made and programmed. The dealership is the only option now.

your car has what's called "immobilizer". it's a theft-deterrent system that disallows your car to start if attempted by using a "clone" key. if you order a new key from the dealer, it's either you get a blank one then just have it cut, or you get the exact same key for your car. in any case, you need to have it programmed in order for your car to "read" the key

3) The cheapest way to do this is to buy a new set *2 keys from ebay they're sold for 15 bucks and you can reprogram them by looking at your manual they show you how . also the seller has some instructions so don't worry.

I don't think you can just buy 2 keys and program them yourself. You have to already have 2 keys programmed in order to do this. I only had one key when I bought my car, and it cost me $68 at the Ford dealership to have one cut and programmed, and it took about 45 minutes. You have to go to Ford.
