Default OD or no OD that is the question.?

ok, long time question never answered cause I never asked, my 1st ever car (Automatic) with Over Drive was technically my '89 Caprice however I didn't experience a button controlled OD till my '01 Focus. Now I have an '02 V6 Mustang Automatic, and am wondering if in a drag is it better to launch with OD off or on? then also when to turn it back on if off???

off

but it really wont matter
OD is 5th gear

you see 1 is a high ratio

for example

1st gear lets say 100 RPMS go in to the transmission, only 20 will come out
2nd 100 goes in 50 comes out
3rd 100 goes in 75 comes out
4th, witch is the last official gear, 100 in 100 out. this is also known as 1:1
5th ( OD ) means 100 go in 150 come out.

now these arent exact, just a round idea.

however with the OD
leave it off when your in the city. if ur gonna cruise suburban roads around 45+ turn it on.

OD drops your RPMS to save gas, however when racing high rpms is where your power band is...but your not gonna go through 5 gears in the quarter. with od off youll prolly cross the line high rpms 4th gear. with it on it may kick in near the line.

so the odds are it wont even come in to play in a drag. but it doesent matter. try running a quarter with it off, if you make it through with OD off and dont rev limit out, id just stay with that.

As far as the OD is concerned, I would just leave it on, no point in turning it off. It doesn't affect launching capabilities, you won't ever go into OD before the 1/4 mile is done, and Ford has already done the calibrations for you, so if your not going fast enough for it to shift into overdrive, its not going to.

About the only thing I can see turning it off for is, to not wait for it to downshift if you need to get around somebody on the highway, or you just want the car to spin more rpm so you can hear it.
