Last night, 9pm, I'm driving my cousin home after a long day of hanging out (he's on spring break from school) with my wife in the back seat. I come to a red light and when it turns green I hit the gas and take off. I mean not flooring it or even close to that, just a favorite strip of street to do 50 instead 35 ya know? I drive that way till the next stop sign, slow down and that was that. All of a sudden I get to another red light and a HONDA Mini-van with what I think were two teenagers or two younger dudes pulls up along side of me. This light turns green and they floor it like we're supposed to be racing. I'm not even paying attention. I'm thinking "what's with these punks?" so when they see me ignoring them they start to get pissed off with me...and I can't figure why. I know I didn't cut them off or certainly give them the idea I wanted to race and even LOOK at 'em. So then they slow down get behind me and start flashing the brights. Then, they start honking the horn.. Now the 'me' of ten years ago would have slammed on the brakes, jummped out of the car and started "figuring things out" if you know what I mean. The almost 30 year old me, with two passengers and a brand new Mustang, decided to ignore them. Well...the more I pay no mind, the more brazen these guys become!!! They pull up along side of me and start yelling something and then the guy sheepishly acts like he's gonna hit my car!! You know, quickly dipping to the right (with me in the right lane) Now I'm starting to get mighty pissed. Anyways, it happens we're getting close to my cousins neighborhood (a ritzy part of the Chicago suburbs) not a cool place to get arrested for fighting with freaked out teenagers. I turn to enter the deeper part of the neighborhood and these guys decide not to follow me there..don't know why.
I've played the event in my head a few times since last night... what the hell did I do to piss them off? Was it because I refused to race? Or because I ignored their attempts to insite me....or is it just that I'm driving a Mustang and they're in mom's minivan?
I notice little things like this alot...people not wanting to let me in on a crowded highway....people trying to beat me out at lights, or not give way in parking lots...
Iv have not been in that situation before with kids causing a problem but the constant reving at red lights and taunting you to a race , lane changes , iv gotten use to it and does not bother me.
1 thing i would do is make sure you have a bat in your trunk or in the back seat and some mace , it will come in handy 1 day .
no, for highway on-ramps tho, there are ppl that just dont like to move over. if they can. asfar as the mini van almost hitting you i would have got out of the car and sent them to bed early. or called the cops and say that theres a van on RT 6 that running me off the road. and tell the cop youll stay on that road till a responder comes, remember nothing says i love you more than a legal matter

While not for situations like you describe, I have called police on the cell phone a number of times.
Don't mind them, they're probably looking for a race and ticked you wouldn't play along. Juveniles.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.
i have an 89 5 liter that i've owned for 8 years now. that type of thing ALWAYS happens to me because my car is loud and looks pretty mean. i've had everything from saturns to ricers to cargo vans with guys that wanted to race or yelling do a burn out while revving their stock sounding 4 and 6 bangers.
when i first got the car i'd give in and light em up but after a season driving it i decided that they're not lucky enough to see what my car has.
the only time i really go all out now after all the mods and work i've put in is to SMOKE an LS1 or basically any camaro or vette! and some of the time with them ill be the one provoking haha.
thats funny, just remember you're the one that'll get the ticket when racing a minivan because you're in the sports car!!
The Minivan duo just didn't like being ignored.
I have noticed that when I drive the Mustang that is harder to merge politely with traffic. I would consider my Stang a little "flashy", and therefore a sort of target for peoples passive aggresiveness, at least I think so. So when I drive it I make a conscious effort to be courteous and use my blinkers graciously on the highway way prior to changing lanes, and more times then not people block me. I find it funny that they will try so hard to not make eye contact with me, as if they didn't notice that I was there.
When I drive my DD, a 98 VW Jetta TDI, that is ussually grundgy, people will let me in easier. Maybe its pitty or simpathy when I drive the Jetta.
The Stang's deffinitely put out a "Vibe", and most don't understand it or know how to interpret it. Luckily we have eachother.

It happens occasionally to me too.Case in point: I'm jumping on the interstate @ my local exit one day to go to Nashville. And of course the courteous thing to do is move over if you're on the interstate already and your in the right hand lane that receives merging traffic. Now this is a fairly long ramp so I can see the oncoming traffic pretty good. Theres this guy in a pickup that for some reason doesnt move over. He has plenty of room and every one else has already moved. So, being a 40 yr old guy with his new toy, I gun it. I can tell he gunned it too. I finally merge onto the interstate, barely making it in front of him going over 95 mph. I'm still not sure who the bigger jackass is, me or him.
They just wanted to have fun racing, Always when I get on the highway I see a lot of hondas trying to race and I've done it once some other couldn't do it in there cuz there was a lot of traffic in front of me. Also when Its late I dont do it I pretend I will but na czu there could be a cop hiding. So I race when is low traffic and on the day light... and no tickets yet....
i have to agree with 232-K7 i say people are either jealous or they dislike ford, everytime i pull up to a stop light if someone is in a sports car next to me they always try to race me or something. now mind im still young so when a guy that i have frequent problems with(he cuts me off and flicks me off all the time when i see him, he drives a 2007 mustang v6) starts to mess with me i had to put him in his place i raced him and he lost traction on the start and i beat him to the next light. After that he was mad and took off at the next light and cut many people off as if i was racing him again. Well needless to say he left me alone after that. I am really lucky the cops didnt see that. I wouldnt do that again i pushed my luck already.
Same thing happened to me once I was at the deer park mall just leaving my work and these kids chase me in their subaru legacy. I first thought it was a coincidence but they kept close and took every turn I did until i eventually whipped the car around to face them and held my torque wrench which was in the back seat out the window. then I proceeded to chased them off.

I just felt perplexed all night...why follow me so long and fein like you're gonna hit my car? If a guy has no interest in it...then leave him alone...go find another minivan to race or some other person to harrass...
The "male-ape" in me wanted to get out and beat their F-in heads in...the "adult" in me recognized the risk in that solution. I suppose I could have just raced 'em but Park Ridge after 9pm is kind of a crappy place to go street racing....
well needless to say, if they live in my neighborhood and find me again, I'm going to be less "forgiving".
Everybody gets one.
jerks...
Thanks so much for all the replies...makes me realize I'm not the first.
bro it happens man if you see that van again i would write down the license plate number and report them.
thats very true, i didnt even think of that... thats attempted vehicular manslaughter if they seriously tried to run you off the road. thats messed up.
