Hey all! First things first, I just want to say THANK YOU to all that have answered my previous questions in the past, I am forever greatful!!
Now, I'm sorry for making another thread about tuners, but I was searching all over this forum for answers, but can't find it!
Well, I'm getting my tuner in a couple of days from AFM (REALLY EXCITED)!!!
My questions are:
1. When I get my car inspected (which will be soon), will I pass while having my custom tune installed? Or do I have to flash it back to stock before inspection?
2. When I plug in the tuner for the first time, does the tuner load my stock tune automatically or do I have to manually put it in?
3. Before I plug in the tuner, do I really need to turn off the fuel line (or fuel something)?
Again, sorry for the weird questions, but I couldn't help it! Thanks in advance!
ok first things first...when you tune a car it leaves a code behind saying that something has been done to the car...and with the sct tuner it will not leave that signiture behind..plus you could have 4 diff tunes with that... for emissions, stock, performance and all that, and doesnt leave the signiture behind so they will have no idea it you tuned your car, but thats only with sct as far as i know
Thats all they do to check for emissions now days is plug a scan tool in and check for codes...if they find codes you fail...but with the sct tuner you can turn all the codes off for emissions...your car could be running like **** spitting out fuel hesitating like ****...but there would be no codes and you would pass lol....fun with tuners
Thanks, I guess when I get it inspected, I'll flash it back to stock just to play safe. I heard that in NJ, instead of a 2 year inspection, it's going to be 4 years (I hope). Either way, after inspection, I wouldn't have to worry till later on...

1. They may look for codes before they do the emissions testing but they will run the car on a dyno in almost every state that requires emissions testing so that they can vary the speeds/loads on the engine.
2. You cannot disable emissions controls or force the computer to not respond to improper sensor inputs with any type of tuner. If the computer finds the emisisons out of specs as well as any other issues with what it is looking for it will set the CEL (check engine light) and it will store codes. About the ONLY thing that can be fooled is you can get O2 eliminators. No other sensor can be magically ignored without setting a CEL or prevent the PCM from storing codes.
3. If your car cannot pass the tailpipe sniffer it will fail. At a minimum all states will still put the sniffer in your tailpipe if emissions testing is required.
4. Tuners do NOT leave behind any sort of code to say that one was ever installed on the car. None.
um...yes tuners do leave a signiture behind after you tune them...and emissions here are different then they are in canada...and i guess you dont tune cars much to know that...

Umm. I am American and lived in America for 36 years. I was a mechanic. I worked on cars for 14 years. Tuners leave nothing behind when you reflash back to stock. Emissions in Massachusetts where I am from are close to what they are in Ontario and in most states in the US where they require emissions testing.
I noticed that the op is from NJ. Here in New Jersey, during inspection, they will plug into your computer to check. What they are checking for are any codes that have been tripped then reset. That check is one of the first checks.
