There isn't really a set distance between the stripes it's all about what looks good. My advice would be to set them on the car (with backing on so that it doesn't stick) where you like and step back. If you want them farther apart or closer together then move them. Then make some way to standardize the positioning on the car. It's your car and it's all about your style. Just make sure that they are centered on the car and evenly spaced all the way back.
