Default 2001 3.8 RPMs hang / idly too low / rough.

Hey all!

Haven't been around in awhile, and have had my poor little daily driver Mustang parked due to a header replacement I couldn't quite afford. =( Well, I finally shelled out $470 today and had a new header put on the passenger side, and that fixed the horrible exhaust leak I had. I went tearing around town, racing ricers out of stoplights, the whole 9 yards. Well, everything was great, I'd never been so glad to hear my Mustang's painfully QUIET stock exhaust sound before! Then I noticed that my RPMs were hanging a bit when I ran them high before shifting... They've done this before, so I replaced the throttle position sensor and it got better for awhile... Now, also, when I'm idling, once they RPMs drop back to 1k, they hover there for a moment, then drop to 750, or even 500 and kind of "shudder" a little, before going back to 1k/750 and stabilizing for a moment, then doing it again.

Someone said this may be as simple as cleaning my throttle body? Is this the case? If so, how do I access the t/b and clean it?

If not.. Any other suggestions?!!? Thanks!!!

~David

to clean TB take off air intake and jsut use a dry rag to wipe it off with carb cleaner. or unbolt it and clean it with a dremel polishing wheel and steel wire brush.

check your spark plugs and wires. make sure they are in good shape, and that the plugs are gapped right

Awesome, thanks!

I actually had it tuned up recently with platinum plugwires.. Or something like that. :P

I'll try and clean the t/b tomorrow and see if that helps. Any other ideas as to what may be causing it?

Thanks again!

Hrm... I was thinking about putting a new CAI on it, you think that may help the vacuum leak if it exists?

Don't forget your idle air control valve. Unbolt it and check for build-up inside of it as well.

Try not to scuff the inside of the TB too much. There is a factory coating on the inside of the TB and the MAF wire, carb clean washes it away. If the TB looks clean insde (or reasonably clean) I would not flush it with carb clean.

Use some electronic parts cleaner on the MAF wire, but same scenerio there, only so many times before cleaning it won't work anymore.
