when you have a high rpm problem the first thing that comes to mind is a vacuum leak. i would listen to the car and try to find any sounds of air being sucked in with the exception of the intake, a hose could be broken off something as simple as that.

no thats not the case, there are hoses all over the engine bay that control the intake manifold vacuum, look for any hoses that are cracked or rotted out they could be leaking causing the vacuum leak

another thing to look at... the throttle control motor (connects right to the intake up by the manifold). i had this problem with my car, the rpms were all over the place, and i switched that out and it idles perfect now. it was like a $30 part and takes like 20 minutes to change...

TPS or IAC sounds like the culprit. Also, check you throttle body to make sure it is clean and there are no buildup around the butterflies. Take it off and clean it thoroughly.

Mine does that just about every time I come back from the track because of the nitrous......

its the idle air control valve (IAC). common problem on fords. simple fix. you can try to clean it but i found that it almost never works. just replace it. its bolted onto the throttle body with two small bolts and has one electrical connector. i priced out mine through napa and its was around $100

its right on the throttle body. its has two small bolts holding it on and i think a 2-wire connector. just unbolt it and pull it off. clean it with carb/throttle body cleaner and reinstall it. the old gasket should still be ok to use again. NAPAONLINE®

that link is to the napa iac for my 2000. if yours isnt the same it will look close

i had my hood up today and i noticed that the iac is not actually on the throttle body itself, but on the intake manifold near the throttle body facing the firewall. sorry for giving you the wrong info
