Default 3.73 gears and tlok project started

Well the day has finally come. Friday evening my dad and i started to get the mustang ready for the gear swap. We decided to remove the rear from the car and place it on a bench in order to work on it easier. On friday night we had it almost completely out, but the lower arm bolts were so corroded we couldn't remove it until saturday morning when we took a torch and sledge hammer to the bolts.

We got the rear out and set on the bench by 10am. We undid the cover and let it drain and wow, that smell is worse than tranny fluid. Anyways, after removing the axles and the differential, we sprayed the inside with brake cleaner to get it clean. While we have the rear end out, i plan on re-finishing it by painting it black and polishing the differential cover. I figure looking underneath and seeing shiny polished aluminum against black would look good. As of the end of saturday night, we are in the process of getting the gears and t-lok set in the right position so there will be no whining.

Sunday is the last day of the weekend and im not sure if it will be complete yet. I am looking at a middle of next week completion date. I sure hope the gears are worth all of this effort!

Tuesday night at 11:00 pm we finished it up. The gears were in spec and all the bolts are torqued correctly. Took it out for a test drive and have absolutely no whine from the rear end. I also painted the outside of the pumpkin and axle tubes with truck bed liner in hopes that it keeps it from rusting. The cover was polished up and a few layers of clear coat was sprayed on to keep it nice as well.

All in all, the job was relatively hard, dirty, and took quite a bit of time, but of course this was the first time i had ever changed gears before. We absolutely had to use my dad's work (machine shop) in order to get certain things in correctly and to get access to the needed special tools. I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a few days, a nice garage, and the mechanical skills to work with tight tolerances.

Now to the good stuff. The test drive went well. We drove it around to make sure everything was in working order and the rear end was up to temp. We went to a back road and did a light launch and wow, even with the 3.73 gears in the auto, you definitely feel the extra kick. Also, at 35mph in town, i am now in OD, which will help with gas mileage. I couldn't be happier with the gears. Now i just have to break them in and take them to the strip, to see what i really got out of them.
