I just got back from the track and i am a little bit disappointed in my new gears. I had a 93 octane tune that took off .6 and dropped me from a 16.25 to a 15.65. After that i installed my 3.73 gears and t-lock. After a few runs, my new best time was only a 15.48. I spent 4 days doing the gear swap in my own garage and only got .17 out of it? I am just frustrated because i was always told gears make it so much faster. I didnt have traction problems, i launched at the same rpm, my burnout was the same, everything was the same. The only thing that may have made it less fast was the 10 degree warmer temps outside. From the seat of the pants feel, it feels faster, it feels like it should be running high 14's, but it most certainly is not. Total with gears and tune i shed .77 seconds, which is great, but i just expected more out of the gears themselves.

The transformation has begun!
Thanks guys, i guess i feel a little bit better now. No, i don't hit 4th/OD. Like i said, traction is not a problem, my 275 wide summer performance tires work great.
And it does need to lose some weight. I run it with everything still in it, including jack and spare. I run it that way because its what i run on the street, and its my daily driver. I don't want to fool myself and think its faster than it really is in DD trim. IDK why i feel that way lol i just do.
14's is my goal for now. Well, the mod and speed bug never ends. Hopefully by the end of summer, a new mod (or mods) will come along and maybe it will put me where i want to be. Thanks fellas

Taking .17 off your track time is about right for a gear install. The average is .2, so you are there. Don't forget, most guys would kill for a .2 shave in the drag racing world.
I really think you did well all in all. So congrats, but it is diet time in all areas as I know the rims alone would save you a bunch. Don't believe me? Come down some Saturday and we can put my Welds on your car and take it to the track for a comparison......
I believe you on the weight loss part. I do need to get some lighter wheels. My question is, what stock mustang rims are the lightest out there (the 15inch Ponies or something)? And i know they won't be as wide as my 17x9 mach 1's with 275 tires, but will they still offer as much grip? Im thinking a visit to the junk yard may be in order. I might try to find some light wheels. Who knows, maybe ill stumble across some heads and intakes to send out to get ported. Haha its nice to dream.
I saw some GT's, about 5 of them, at the track last night and i saw them all run about the same time, mid 13's (modded). I thought to myself, "hey, there are 5 gt's running the same time, and none of them really stand out as amazing, but what if i made my v6 run in the 14's NA, thats something not everyone would expect to see." I could easily trade my car in for a gt, but ya know, i like doing things different.

i am in the same boat as you... I would love to beable to beat the gt or run the same times and do it with a v6
What Cobra rims are you talking about?? The chrome ones?? They are not lighter... What year of Cobra?? The 97-98?? Those rims are still fairly heavy too... I honestly think that the 99-00 GT five stars are the lightest cheap rims. They are 17x8 inch.
OP, You have no need of 275's, they are for looks only for you. They are what is slowing you down more than anything. I bet if you went down to 245's you could drop another .2 tenths off of your time. You can get 245's that would outgrip your Ultracs that you have on the car right now. Just saying.
I think your time is very good. I would be happy to hit that. You have a nice set of mods done to the car. I bet a lot of V6 guys would like to have that many mods done to their cars. What was your trap??
If so, i love those things. If my car would have came with them stock, i wouldnt have bought my machs. If those are not the lightest rims, can you please post a picture or a link to a picture?

Those weigh 47-48# per rim with tire. We have a set of those on my Daughter's car. Too heavy.....
Your trap speed indicates weight. Take off the weight, your traps will go up, and your times will go down. I believe my traps were around 91mph or so when I first started racing the '01, and my times were 15.0 with stock trim, CAI, and a tuner......
Whats the lightest wheel i can get without spending a ton of money? Preferably something i could get from a junk yard stang? What about my stock rims? Are they the lightest? I have snow tires on them now, so i would have to buy another set.

Believe it or not, those are the lightest combo we've found for stock trim. Those are 39# with rim and tire with 225/55/16's. You can find a set of racing rims and skinnies used for around $500.00 with tires. Those are your best bet. There is slight modification to your brake bracket if you don't want to use wheel spacers, but nothing major. I think the prostars look the best our our year cars, but I have draglites because that was the best deal I could find at the time.
With some drag radials and the skinnies up front, you should be in the 14's once you shed the weight.......
