Default Paint my Stang...

Hey Everyone

I was looking into painting my Mustang. She's a 99 Silver Coupe and while the piant still looks fairly new, I wanted to do a new color. I'm feelin' some kind of blue, but I'm still looking into it. First, I wanted to get a ballpark price range from those of you who have painted your cars. Next, would I be better off going to a body shop or would a place like Maaco do the same work?

Thanks for Reading!

Why not throw a "painting party"? We used to do it when any of my buddies moved into a new apartment. Invite a few friends and give each one of them a brush and a bucket of paint. When the painting was finished, the person who lived there would buy pizza and beer for everybody who had helped paint. I wouldn't have suggested this for painting a car, but you mentioned you're considering MAACO. And a "painting party" would only be one step below that, so...

I wouldn't let Maaco do it unless you're wanting a mediocre paint job. To do it right (door jambs, under hood, trunk, etc.), I would say you're probably looking at anywhere between $3-5k). Have you considered doing a two tone? Would be a lot cheaper, plus would set your car apart from the rest of the group?

oO I love the two tone! - how do you think that would look on a convertible?

Mine is true blue, it's the best stock blue in my opinion. Definitely don't let macco do it, i have white over spray on my hood just from getting a side panel repainted.

Dont go to macco. Went their 2 times once to get it painted they mixed the wrong paint and painted it horribly and the second time (warrenty from the paint due to flakeing) they did a better job but its already rusting on the roof and it hasent even been a year since the repaint. Btw it cost me over 2000$.

Well a good paint job can run you around 4 to 6 thousand dollars. Not cheap by any means.

i have to wonder if some of you have actually been to MAACO or are just trashing the company due to their reputation...

i went to MAACO to have my car repainted (boo, hiss...). they did alright, but im not going back. they didnt really pay attention to detail like i thought they should have. theres nothing wrong with the job, but that's because i had to go back 3 times because they put the wrong bumper on my car, there was a place where the paint was running, and they painted my exhaust pipes...? and, this is their "Signature" service, or "Stage4" as they call it, and that's their top of the line package. cost me around $2,500.00
as mentioned before, if you want one of those "Holy Sh$% look at that car" paint jobs, expect to pay upwards of $4k-$5k.

oh and btw, MAACO does not offer a "Holy Sh$%" package.

thier cheapest Full Repaint package, the "Ambassador" service is $200.
now THAT is scary !!!

it's like buying one of those $1k turbo kits off ebay. sure, $1k is a lot of money, but what can you really expect from a $1k turbo kit??? not much. you get what you pay for.

so bottom line, if i had to choose again, i'd have saved up another $2k or so and had myself a "Holy Sh&%" paint job rather than having gone to MAACO.

if any of you have to go to a bodyshop for insurance reasons, stay the hell away from MAACO. dont go there unless you want to save money, because for the prices they charge...you can't complain a lot.

wow only 200.. thats scary but in my price range, if they paint it bad the only thing i have to worry about is rusting or flakeing, cant i just go over it with some gloss protection spray paint..? or is that a horrible idea?

lol there's a lot more to worry about than flaking/rusting. for $200, they'll probably just dump a bucket of paint on your car, smear it around with a brush, and call it a day.

to be perfectly honest, here are a few things you can expect from a $200 paint job:

- you will probably have your car back the very next day
-overspray on EVERYTHING
-runs in the paint EVERYWHERE
- no paint under spoilers, mirrors, etc.
- no clearcoat whatsoever
- flaking/chipping paint even before your very first carwash
- painted doorlocks, radio antennas, tires, window mouldings, etc.
- horrified looks of disgust as women and children flee the scene when you cruise through a parking lot...

$200 is a lot of money to just piss away; plus, i highly doubt your car looks as bad as that job would make it look.
