Default Power Steering QUestion

On March 28, 2009 I got in a wreck which broke my Rack n Pinion. I drove my Mustang with my Power Steering pump dry. Idk If this will do future damage but I was to replace it as well with the Rack n Pinion. What parts should I get? By the way I bought a rack n pinion at the junkyard just to hold for now. I dont know the past history of my Rack n pinion. The reason why I might need top replace these is my steering gets sometime hard to turn than normally. Does that sound like a power steering pump issue as well as the rack?

Thanks,

Default I know this one. Maybe

Sounds like there is dirt and or sludge in the system. It probably came from your salvage yard rack. Dirty Ford rack & pinion systems are known for that sensation happening.

Start with the cheapest fix first. Get a good shop to flush out your steering system and put in all new high quality fluid. It might do the trick, however, running the pump dry probably caused some wear in there, too.

I once had a '95 Probe GT that began to intermitantly feel like the steering had locked up, usually just turning into a tight freeway off ramp at high speed. The sudden change from power assist to no power is a pretty hair raising feeling, not to mention truly dangerous. A mechanic friend of the family cleaned it all up for me and I had another 60,000 miles of trouble free driving.

Default SC?

That reminds me.

I had a PS pump go south in my 4.7 Dodge Dakota w/Flowmaster c/back. It started whining a little one day, then it progressively got worse over a couple of days. It had fluid in it but it then started to leak badly around the front shaft seal.

On the way to get it fixed I had 2 different people gimmie the universal roll down the window sign. Then they asked, "What kinda supercharger are you runnin' in that thang?"

It don't solve the problem here but I thought it was funny.
