Default Just bought a new cam

Hey guys, i have finally decided to step up from bolt on stuff to the actual internal workings of the engine. I bought the Comp cams 212/218 cam from SSM and also new springs and retainers. On top of that, i will be gasket matching and possibly P&P my heads and intakes. The stock heads and intakes flow pretty well correct? If so i wont be porting the heads and intakes much. Also, is there any areas in the heads or intakes that are close to water tunnels? The last thing i want to do is hit one of them haha.

If you got the cam (and springs and retainers) from SSM, and you are thinking of P&P your heads and intake: why didn't you just get the whole powerpak from them? Just curious...

Anyways, the P&P will definitely flow much better than stock, so I would consider that a worthwhile upgrade! The Tom's (shiner & shine1) could help you out better with any clearance issues... I know Tom Jr. has P&P heads and intake (although we are single-port, unlike you)... They should chime in here soon anyway...

Congrats on the cam!

You can gasket match the the intake runners, and make "D" shaped ports of your exhaust ports. Take a razor and ruler, and make straight lines down your exhaust ports, then make a line perpendicular to those lines along the bottom of the exhaust port. It should be a "D" shape with the flat line along the bottom of your current hole.

Silver- I wish i could have bought SSM P&P heads and intakes, however, my pockets arent that deep lol. I also like doing as much as i can in my own garage, so i like to keep that going when i can.

Shiner- Thanks for the tip. On the D-shape exhaust, how deep into the head should i go with the D-shape? Also, how deep into the intake should i port? Just an inch or so? I planned on using a fine sandpaper to polish everything, what grit would you recommend?

You can only go in so far because your exhaust ports are not that deep. There is a good writeup on the DIY P&P on the top of the tech page. You don't need to take a ton of material off your intake side as much as your exhaust side.......
