if you've never painted anything before, my humble suggestion would be to just let a good bodyshop do it; and save yourself a potential headache.
as far as the color, is there anything else on your car that is also black and would match the scoop? like wheels, stripes, headlamps/taillamps etc? if so, it'd probably look good.
