I think you are talking about the 1 and 2 that are below the D on the gear select right? The 1 locks the transmission in 1st gear, 2 locks it in second. Everyday driving you should just leave it with the regular drive gear select position. I only use the bottom two for the autocross course. I think that is what you were asking

What if i decide to race, could I use the 1 and/or 2?
Thanks for being nice and helpful..the others made me feel stupid haha
IF you're gonna race take it to the track and then you still just put it in D and forget it. People are not trying to make you feel stupid, they are trying to help you NOT ruin your car/transmission. Read the owner's manual. It will give you the conditions where shifting into the other gears is appropriate. You could never hope to shift the car better/faster than the computer does.
I screwed around alot in my first Mustang. It was a 2004 auto. I shifted the gears while racing alot. I had to spend $500 to get new spider gears put in. BOTTOM LINE, NEVER SHIFT AN AUTOMATIC WHILE RACING.

Manually shifting will not hurt a thing. There's just really no point unless you just really want to simulate a manual tranny. But doing it isn't going to cause any harm

I don't know. My car only had 20,000 miles on it and it ran fine until I started shifting it. Then the spider gears went out on it. The tires would lock up around turns. THE MECHANIC SAID IT WAS THE GEARS. HE SAID IT WAS BECAUSE I WAS SHIFTING. I BELIEVED HIM!!??!!?? TRUE OR NOT, I DON'T KNOW.

you can use ur 1 and 2 but only until a certain RPM
just mess with ur first gear until around 30 or 35 mph...ur rpms will be at around 3000 or higher...stay like that for about 5 seconds and "tap" the gas...your gonna feel it jerk
and then once ur still at around 35 mph move it to 2nd and ur rpms will drop...then you have to go a little bit faster this time...go at around 50 mph....etc...
But dont let ur rpms go passed 4500
But other than that just leave it on D....use 1 and 2 if your going to do a roll race
What if i decide to race, could I use the 1 and/or 2?

No problem. They come in handy when on the autocross course. It gives you more control over the transmission. It allows you to pick when you want the transmission to shift and this saves you tons of time on course. I don't know what the benefits are in drag racing but I would imagine it would do the same thing
