The three piece comes with a new grill backing with a hole for the pony already cut.
With the two piece you have to take off the old grill backing and cut out a hole for it.

+3, i went with the 2 piece to begin with and didn't like it so I ended up buying the third. The 3rd piece cleans it up a lot.
Mine didn't have the stock backing either.
