Question 2002 Mustang owner, looking for performance help

Hey gang,

I've been driving a gutless 94 BMW 318 for 5 years and finally got fed up with it. I'm picking up a 2002 V6 Mustang 5 speed in the next couple of days that's very clean. It's the Deluxe and has no aftermarket mods, including standard tires and rims.

I'd like to take a few hundred bucks and try to tweak it out a bit. I'm not a car guy (webmaster is more my thing). I've been reading the forum and it seems like these are probably the way to go in order of increasing cost:
  • Aftermarket air filter
  • Cold air intake
  • 3.73 gears (I do highway driving, 45 mi each way about 2X/week
  • T-Lok (28?)
I've been poking around American Muscle and for parts only I'm thinking the above is about $450?

If I do all that, should I be concerned about standard tires/suspension? Also, anyone recommend a short shift kit? I had one installed on a previous car and I liked it a LOT.

Thanks for any advice!

Vic

I'm not sure on all the prices, but the list you have is a good list. Definitely look at short-throw shifters. They help alot!!

Just ordered the following from American Muscle:

Mustang V6 Cold Air Intake Kit
Intake Spacer
Steeda Tri-Ax Shifter and Black Billiard Ball Shift Knob Combo Pack
Shifter Base & Handle Gasket

I'm thinking that's $315 well spent to increase the fun factor on my car.

Stock exhaust? No sound, no fun.

LOL, I'm an older married guy - I don't want a super-load exhaust regardless of how cool it sounds. Plus, I can't dump the additional money right now.

If I do decide to do anything with the exhaust, I'll probably look at getting a Flowmaster Super Flow 44 muffler and that's about it ( Flowmaster Super Flow 44 Series Offset Muffler at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping! ).

Almost forgot, I was going to also order a Clutch Adjustment Kit - just added that to my order.

Vic, I'm an older married guy too. Just can't imagine doing some of the mods that you are planning, especially the air intake, while still choking the system off with a y-pipe and stock exhaust. And the new exhaust doesn't have to be THAT loud...

Hadn't thought of that. But I've already dropped $500 and told my wife it was $300.

I'll have to wait until next spring for anything additional.

What would you recommend for letting the car breathe better but not having it "teenage-loud"?

Thanks,

Vic

Vic,

There are a TON of threads here about different exhaust set-ups and I think the majority of them are not obnoxiously loud, especially if you keep the factory cats and just modify behind them.

As for the wife, try this one. Slowly destroy the factory exhaust, all the while making it louder and louder. When she becomes annoyed enough by the noise to ask, explain that the exhaust must be shot and needs to be replaced.

If she catches on, I had nothing to do with it.

Good luck.
