certain automatic set ups will shift faster and better than standard. people usually opt for the standard because you have absolute control of shift times, cheaper to fix, and it is more fun to drive...

i opt for auto in my car, cuz im lazy and the girl can't drive anything else. Truck is standard but thats way mroe different, has to be.

Sticks aren't necessarily faster per se (as in top speed); they'll top out at about the same speed. But a manual transmission does allow for more RWHP than an auto. You'll typically lose approx 16% of the HP at the crank in an automatic. The HP lost from crankshaft to rear wheels isn't as drastic with a stick. So what you'll gain in convenience, you'll lose in power.

standard will usually get you better mileage, if you drive properly, and according to the laws

you may get a hair more gas milage with a manual
they are cheaper

the real reason.

a manual with 3.31 will get to speed faster than a auto with 3.31 due to internal gear ratios.

example 2005 mustang

manual with 3.73s is the same as auto with 4.10s actuly a few rpms more on the good side.

the internal gears are different, like i said they get there faster not go faster

ok well figure u need power to shift and run ur auto wile u control ur manual so it does free up like 10 or so hp back in the day like 50,60, and 70's when u bought a car they would always say 250hp with auto and 260hp with manual i dont know y they quit given specs on both but yes manuals have more power but take longer to shift usually so its kinda a toss up they have more power but if u suck at shifting u will lose but any one can shift a manual

hp is measured at the crank on modern cars not rwhp thats prolly why. i can shift my manual faster than most automatics!

kade and that civic i beat and my dad can contest to that hehe

The speed of autos vs sticks is debatable but, one thing autos have for sure is consistency.

Living close to the city and traveling through it often, in traffic, with a manual, would undoubtedly drive me bonkers!

It would also make it darned near impossible to drive, eat a burger, text, read the newspaper and switch the cd's in the changer all at once.

Agreed. Auto's are better suited for drag racing. TO each their own. I would not own a stock/near stock automatic 6cyl Mustang but if I built one for drag racing, I would not use a stick.
